I've been told that it may be because we're food enthusiasts and are vocal in our appreciation for fine food, but to be regaled with stories from the chef himself and then given two free glass of excellent red wine from his own selection made our seemingly humble date night startlingly excellent!
My partner and I dined at Paymasters on a Thursday night last month for our weekly date night, as we had heard great reviews of this restaurant and being newly-anointed Novocastrians, we felt it our duty to try all of the eateries in our immediate vicinity. We were very pleasantly surprised by the whole wonderful experience.
We were given a table downstairs via the old pay-window where the financier used to hand out people's pays many moons ago. We only know this story because the chef came out to tell us after we enquired about the building's history to our waitress. He regaled us with stories about the floor, the extension, the upstairs and the kitchen. What a delight!
Before that happened, we had been enjoying the relaxed atmosphere in the restaurant and the delicious food of seafood bisque & garlic prawns (for me) and baked Camembert cheese & duck maryland (for him) on offer. The restaurant is located by the park overlooking the harbour, and during the unusually warm night, they had the windows open so the view was beautiful. The staff were friendly and the ambiance warm. The food was of value when you consider taste for cost. It is easy to get to and from the looks of it that night, is quite popular.
I was very happy with our experience at this restaurant and would highly recommend it to anyone who appreciate good food and service.
