“Great for an extended stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

Was travelling with two friends and given the lack of "family" type suites which cater for odd numbers of guests at regular CBD hotels, I took a chance on a "mystery" hotel and was pleasantly surprised.

This place is obviously geared towards business travelers on extended stays. The building is very new and clean with the apartments being roomy and with full kitchens for those wanting to look after their own meals. Not a very "warm" atmosphere with the décor leaning towards industrial greys, but everything was well constructed and clean. Beds were very comfortable and bathroom was functional without being oversized like the rest of the apartment.

Location is almost ideal, with plenty of dining and drinking options right outside on Darby Street. Underground secure carpark has access from the rear of the building and it can take a bit of finding in the narrow back streets. My room was situated at the rear of the complex and I didn't notice any street or traffic noise. Large outside deck area is ideal if you need fresh air.

Tarriff not unreasonable given the size and quality of the rooms. Reception is not staffed for standard hotel hours so if you are planning an early checkout or late check-in, would recommend prearranging it. Owners manage a number of other "executive apartments" in the city and would expect a similar standard at the other properties.

Room Tip: Probably go for something towards the rear (eastern end) if road noise is an issue.

This new facility has dual key studios and hits the spot for the business traveller. Sleep & comfort were excellent and of course spotless.
I'm sure that the prices will increase as they establish their share of the business market.
I think the front desk should be maned earlier than 8am.

Booked online and only wanted somewhere cheap as we were only staying for two nights, paid only $120 per night so we weren't expecting much. On arrival we were very surprised at the apartment, it was a one bedroom fully self contained unit, very clean and roomy with all the mod cons. The unit appeared to be only about a year old so it was very modern. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. There are numerous restaurants and cafés right outside the front door which was handy. Will most definitely stay here again when we return.

Crown on Darby is quite new and well-located in the middle of the restaurant strip in Cooks Hill. It is also an easy walk across to Honeysuckle Drive and the Newcastle CBD.

The apartment (1 bedroom) had a huge lounge/dining/kitchen. Well-appointed with most of the utensils you will need to stay fully self catering. Gym is not great, but it is an easy 20 minute walk to Bar Beach.

Happy to stop here again.

We booked Through Wotif as a mystery hotel. We were surprised that such a hotel was so cheap for one night. We booked (and paid - $30 extra for a sofa bed) for 2 adults and 2 children in a 1 bedroom apartment. Luckily our youngest child chose to stay with his cousins or there would have been no way our children could have shared the sofa bed - it was tiny. The room was open plan with only a louvred wall separating the "bedroom" from the living area - no privacy for the adults to change. The room seemed clean, however on further inspection the cleaning staff are obviously not doing a through job - there was a take away coffee mug in the freezer and clothing left on the floor in the bedroom - no real big issue, but obviously something that could not have been missed during a proper clean up. The room faced Darby St, which is one of Newcastle's main restaurant strips, the "curtains" were wooden shutters that did little to stop light or noise. After a short walk to get dinner we returned to our room at 9pm to get some sleep as we had a big drive ahead of us the following day. At 9:15pm no less than 3 musicians started up at 3 different establishments. The ensuing cacophony continued until well after midnight - during the night we were also treated to the local hoon Grand Prix as they drove up and down the strip, plus the reassuring lullaby of sirens. At 4:45 the garbage pick up started, followed by the street sweeper...... Our night was over!!! If this wasn't enough puzzlingly the pillows were so big it was actually impossible to get comfortable.
We would not stay here again, the only way to consider a nights sleep would be to ask for a room on the southern side, overlooking Railway Street.

We stayed here for 2 nights. As we walked to our room we noticed electrical wires hanging from the roof which looked a bit dodgy. When we got to our room we were happy with it. I was just having a look around the room and opened the bedside table drawer. Inside were condoms and a filthy bottle of lubricant (complete with pubic hair). It was very gross. On our second night it rained overnight and the door to the outside balcony leaked terribly. All our clothes the we had left out for the next day were soaked! Not happy.

Two plusses , the good secure parking . And the walk in shower. Fairly new building. The facilities are new & very clean. I now prefer these apartment hotels with kitchens .$15 per night for the parking is probably worthwhile but that cost & credit card fee should be absorbed into the price .

Room Tip: Maybe take a room at the back to avoid the passing traffic noise & revellers.
