5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

Great value for money stay. The hotel is perfectly positioned on the ocean front and perfect for a brisk walk up and down the harbour to see the big and small ships.

The rooms are excellent with free WiFi, full size fridges and a kitchen sink! The views from the rooms are just wonderful - waking up to that blue sky and harbour view is pretty unbeatable.

The hotel has a lovely pool, and fee use of the University gym next door which is very well equipped.

We stayed just two nights, but found it to be really welcoming, clean and well equipped for business and pleasure.

I love staying at the Crowne Plaza. It is situated right on the harbour and other than it's aspect has a really nice feel about it. Parking is an issue, it costs 29 dollars for concierge to park your car in an old car park across the road, other than that it's all metered parking. Beware Newcastle parking officers are ruthless. The hotel needs to provide a self park option with a more reasonable tariff, you generally need your car to get around the city. Check-in was fast, friendly and efficient,

The rooms are great and all have kitchenettes. The room was clean and the aircon worked well, the bathroom not so much. Unfortunately there was leftover hair in the bath drain - a bit of a turn off. There is a really nice pool to relax in which looks out towards the harbour.

Over the years Newcastle has continued to grow now the hotel is right amongst nice restaurants which get very busy on a Saturday night. The area has a really nice feel about it. It was very disappointing as a guest we could not get in to the Hotel restaurant for dinner, they were apparently totally full (even though there were 2 tables occupied). We luckily got a table across the road and had a great meal, 3 hours later on our way back the hotel restaurant was still nowhere near capacity.

Slept really well in the bed, very comfortable. The following morning we had the buffet breakfast, it was great even though it was really busy. They handled it well and the food quality was high.

Check-out was a pain and nowhere near as friendly as check-in. An older abrupt lady slowly got us through the routine transaction. As painful as she was I would stay here again and don't let this detract from people staying at the Crowne Plaza Newcastle. There are small things the hotel could work on to bring it back to the awesome experiences I have had in the past.

Peteonholiday, we are glad to read that you enjoyed your holiday to Newcastle!

Your positive feedback comments regarding the location, room layout and comfort, as well as the friendly check in are all appreciated.

Please accept my apologies for the aspects of your stay that were not as satisfactory. Our aim is a comfortable, 'fuss free' relaxing stay for all of our guests, we are sorry that the bathroom cleanliness and your check-out experience did not reflect this.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Crowne Plaza over the weekend. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel special starting with the concierge who welcomed us to the Hotel followed by the reception staff. Our check-in was handled quickly and we were pleasantly surprised with the suite style accommodation which includes a small kitchenette overlooking the magnificent harbour!
The Hotel is maintained in immaculate condition even though it is probably around 10 years old and our room was spotless! There are lots of cafes/bars in easy walking distance but we tried the in-house restaurant for breakfast which was excellent.
The Crowne ticks all the boxes location, ambience as well as excellent service. Make it your choice when in Newcastle.

Room Tip: Book a harbour-view room

Thank you Griswalds59, your review and recommendation is very much appreciated!

Your estimate is correct - the hotel celebrated it's 10th Birthday last year. We work hard to maintain the condition, so your comment of 'immaculate' will be shared with the team.

See you next time,

Yes, its expensive, yes the shower/bath seems a little dated considering the age of the hotel, But, it is a really lovely hotel. The views over the harbor are fabulous (although we stayed in a 'city view' overlooking the hotel entrance. This is the quietest hotel i have ever stayed in. No noise from the unit above, no noise from people walking past, no street noise, and we stayed on a busy saturday night. The little extra we paid for staying here was saved in taxi fares if we had been coming to Honeysuckle, which we were. By the way, if you like Japanese food, Nagisa at Honeysuckle is amazing!
The bed and pillows were super comfy, the bathroom is a good size. Crown Plaza is well worth the visit. We parked out on the street. No dramas in getting a spot just down from the hotel.
On arrival we ordered some Corona's, it took them a little while to arrive, when i rang room service to see where they were i was told that they were actually out but they had gone to get some. When i mentioned on check out that the beers werent actually cold when we got them, but we did appreciate the fact that they actually went out and got some for us, the Coronas were given to us complimentary, now you cant get much better service than that.
Thanks to the great staff.
Do yourself a favour, if you are coming to Newcastle and want a really nice experience, then check out the Crown Plaza, We'll be Back!

Room Tip: Book early and choose a harbour view!

the_t_man05, thank you for your review!

Our location in the Honeysuckle is amazing, well done on exploring the area and discovering the local dining options. Please accept our apologies again for the Corona incident - to hear that you were happy with how it was handled is a compliment to our staff and has been passed on to the team. Your happiness is our number one priority!

We look forward to seeing you soon,

For $260 a night a shower over a bath is not acceptable.
Even when a note is added for a room close to lift due to mobility issues - this did not happen.
$29 a day for parking, while typical is a ripoff. Limited metered off street parking. I believe IHG/PP customers should be offered a deal or discount on parking.

We had to change rooms on arrival once we realised its a shower over a bath, as i cannot do this due to mobility. I had honestly NOT expected one for the price, disappointed.
Lucky the mobility room, which is between conference rooms, bottom level with a view of the pool, was available & we could switch. Again, soooo glad we didn't pay full price.

Room service is expensive, but nice.
Bar fridge prices are typical.
Breakfast room service is expensive, but good, & $33 for a large amount of food. With real coffee!

The staff are the real saving grace for this place. Friendly, polite, efficient, helpful & follow through with what they say they will do.

Our TV had 1990 reception, but the guy fixed it all up with a new box quickly & friendly. He was even good enough to be quiet as our young son was asleep in the room.

Size of rooms is good.
Bathroom good. THough ours needed an exhaust fan badly.

We had a small wood roach on arrival on the coffee table, & worse still each morning we woke to find dead little bugs all over the tiles near the bar fridge YUK!

I have stayed in FAR better for FAR cheaper!
We paid $130 a night & i think that is pushing it.
Would not stay here again, i think there is much better to stay.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback of your most recent stay, especially as an IHG Rewards and Priority Privilege member. Though regrettable, comments such as yours allow us to highlight where we could improve - so we appreciate you bringing these issues to light.

Your comments regarding the bugs in your room are concering - we have a rigorous pest control system, so please accept my apologies that this occured during your stay and caused you discomfort.

It is pleasing to note that our staff were able to address issues quickly and follow through on resolutions. For your next stay, please contact us directly at the hotel and we can tailor a reservation to your needs, and provide a room to suit your preferences.

This was our first visit to Newcastle, and what a lovely surprise. The Crowne Plaza is a fabulous hotel ! The room we stayed in was so nicely appointed; it was spacious,,clean and had all the amenities we needed. The view from our room was of the harbour, and we didn't know Newcastle was so beautiful ! The staff at the hotel were well informed, so very helpful - they couldn't do enough for us. The pool and all outdoor areas were a pleasure to visit and enjoy. Dinner and breakfast at the Seasalt restaurant was also first rate. We will definitely return to this beautiful hotel and to this lovely city and its beaches !

Lovely harbor view from all rooms, on the boardwalk with lots of restaurants within walking distance, incredible beaches for ocean swimming close by, and nice Newcastle and maritime museums. Loved our stay!
