“Very Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

Well this was quite the surprise for me since I wasn't expecting much. I came here for just an overnight stay and was really surprised by the lobby. Apparently it used to be an old Gentlemen's Club and they renovated it for a hostel. You'll see exactly what I mean when you check out the layout of the hostel in general, more specifically the lobby. Even though the hostel is quite old I would definitely come back here if need be, just watch out for some cockroaches in the lobby as I saw a few.

I stayed in the hostel for 2 nights in a 6 shared room. Both nights had little sleep due too no fans (too hot) and not being able to close the window, therefore the noise down below of people kept you awake till early hours in the morning. Along with Mosquito bites all over.. Not worth $70...

On the other hand the location was good, and the staff friendly and helpful!

I only stayed here one night but it would have been nice to stay longer. The building is really old and really cool! The staff were friendly and helpful and put on plenty of activities. The location was handy for the Greyhound and groceries. Good showers, slept well.

Newcastle Beach YHA has much going for it ! Situated close to the main beaches of Newcastle, it is housed in what was previously a "gentleman's club" so I am told. There is a large lounge area (ex ballroom), quite good hostel facilities ... and very friendly staff.

The two people at the desk were extremely helpful and friendly and the guy even gave us two free hours of internet. The hostel was located a couple blocks from the beach in a nice location but the town is a little of a walk away. The hostel itself is a little old and the stairs are definitely pretty creaky, but the big room downstairs was pretty nice. They also did seem to have good deals for everyday of the week; we were there for pizza which was a pretty awesome deal (it was like 8 AUD for all you can eat pizza). Overall, I would recommend just for the fantastic staff and good deals.

This is a great little hostel. They are super friendly and have an activity for the guests almost ever night. One night we played bingo and won a free hour of internet, and another night we had a blast playing trivia. We were able to get work while we were there, which helped a lot with our accommodation fees. I suggest asking about work if you're staying for a long stretch of days.

Newcastle beach was about a 2 minute walk away, and we also visited Nobby's beach and Bar beach. There are plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance.

The one downside I can think of is that there are a ton of flies. Just make sure your windows are closed and lights are off so that you don't attract them at night, and you shouldn't have a problem!
