Another good stay at an Ibis.

Not perfect, for example the window in my room doesn't close perfectly (but at least it can be opened which is always nice to have that option), and for some reason the Fox Sports 2 channel doesn't work and I'm guessing that's the channel that The Ashes was playing on and I would have liked to watch some of that.

However the internet station near reception is free (I'm using it right now!) and the overall price was pretty good. Lots of TV channels. Everything in the room worked except the slightly wonky window. The bathroom area was quite cool, it's like a little space age pod that has been fitted in the corner of the room. The design & layout of the room makes it quite functional and probably seemed a bit bigger than it really is.

It's near one of the city train stations (Wickham I think?) and there is the shopping centre about a block away. Various takeaway places fairly close and you can always dine at the hotel if you don't want KFC/Maccas/Pizza.

Close to everything. For our purposes it was ideally situated. Rooms small but comfortable. Best for overnight or short stay. Would stay again even though I couldn't get the cricket. Dinner in the restaurant was outstanding. Breakfast was good too.

This was a rare bargain. $71 per night over Winter. Hotel has everything you expect of an IBIS and well located for downtown Newcastle and the Customs House historic precinct.Or a jaunt by rail to Maitland. Try Customs House plat du jour for lunch to maintain the festive bargain, or the cafe behind the Newcastle museum

The Ibis Newcastle was chosen because it was close to the Newcastle National Park Croquet Club. It is excellently located close to a train station and the centre of the city. Staff were very welcoming and unfailingly helpful. Sleep broken on Saturday night due to shouting guests arriving back at 3.00 am and noise and sirens on the street.

The real downside was the bistro. The menu is displayed on the TV screen but when you try to order on a Saturday night you are told that this menu is unavailable and there is only a limited menu of about 4 items. This was coupled with a very long wait as there were two (yes two!) tables which had ordered ahead of us. The staff seemed to have numerous other duties so can't be blamed for the delay. Quite honestly it would be better to say that meals are not available at weekends.

Having said that, the buffet breakfast was good

Already a disappointing hotel overall, even taking cost into account.

Saving grace was being able to watch the cricket. Obviously some kind of head-office bean counter has calculated a paltry saving across the Ibis group by scaling back the list of channels available.

I guess it makes sense when every other comfort has been slashed to get the ledger looking better. I'll be surprised if there are pillows in the room in the next month or two.

Nothing nearby except a KFC and a train station.

Dear Phil B,

We appreciate you taking the time to write us about your recent experience here in Newcastle.
Please allow me to express my sincerest apologies that your stay wasn't to your satisfaction.

As we take all comments serious we have made changes to our TV connectivity which enables us to ensure a wider range of free to air channels streaming without weather disruptions. These changes should ensure that major sporting events shown on free to air channels can be watched in your home away from home.

Sincerely,

Thomas Klotz
