“Good budget accommodation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

Budget accommodation in a good location in the Newcastle CBD. Plain but good breakfast. Wifi wasn't working for me but usually free.
A bit noisy at night but not really disturbing.
Staff were attentive and helpful.

We stayed at this hotel and were disappointed by the standard of accommodation for an Ibis brand hotel. Our room was noisy at night from the train line and car park, and the room fittings were tired and in need of a make-over. We asked for a room change but the second room was also noisy from the night club across the street and drunken girls 'screeching' late at night. We would suggest looking for another hotel until the windows are sound proofed and the overall standard is improved.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing the car park and railway line which is quite close on the northern side of the ho...

I usually prefer to stay at high end establishments but decided for a quick fly by night stopover in Newcastle that I would give the IBIS a sample.

The room itself was decent enough but it faced Hunter Street. There was no double glazing so this meant no sound proofing. Dealbreakers in any hotel for me is whether or not I can get a good night's sleep.

The sound of the Doof Doof music from the nightclub across the road seemed to go on forever - I am sure until at least 3.00am. The fridge in the room also kept starting itself over and over so it made sleep very difficult. Another source of annoyance was that the TV was pixelated which is not so great when wanting to have a quick glance at the Olympics every now and then. Our phone also did not work.

The staff were friendly - although slightly indifferent when we mentioned the TV issue (apparently an issue in the entire hotel for Channel 9 and they were not able to check on the main controls just yet).

The room was designed quite nicely considering the space. The fridge had room for your own items which was a good touch.

I imagine if the room had faced over the other side of the building I might be telling a different story as it is probably quieter.

Anyway - have now ticked the IBIS box and will not need to stay at another IBIS.

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT on the Hunter Street side if you like peace and quiet

Stayed overnight on 26th- staff were fantastic, rooms were very clean, breakfast was better than expected and the General Manager was in the lobby talking to guests and assisting with check outs- made you feel special!
