“Room for improvement”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

Need more restaurants in Maitland so was very excited when it opened. Visited not long after opening and thought the food was OK. Tables definately small, would be nice to see out the back. Thought the pork belly could use a bit more colour. Love that they are focusing on local organic produce and beverages. Hopefully will improve with time. Will return again to see how it is going and to support the limited choice of restaurants we have. Another Tapas in Lorn now, would be great to get a couple more so we could wander from one to the next :)

“New exciting place for Maitland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012 via mobile

I am so excited about this place. Food was delicious. Staff friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere and love the idea of the teapot cocktails and Australian boutique beers

“Just what Maitland needs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012 via mobile

I had dinner here with my mother not long after they first opened and we were both extremely impressed. Food was to die for, service fantastic & overall a great little place for a night out of the ordinary. Only downside was that we found it a little bit pricey but we both agreed it was worth it as the food was delicious.

“Disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

Terrible food. We ordered warmed olives, scallops, lamb cutlets and the encrusted chicken tenderloins. The olives were fine, however they only had to be warmed. The scallops tasted very fishy, which could have been an indication that they weren't fresh. The lamb was severely over cooked and the chicken was edible, however similar to a product you'd buy from a takeaway food outlet. The menu lacked creativity and the food tasted like it was cooked by a couple of teenagers not by qualified chefs. I definitely regretted going out and paying for this meal rather than staying home and cooking at home for my friends. This restaurant won't last long. Oh and lastly the teapot cocktails were a rip off.

“A good concept - lacking a bit in execution”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012

The Orange Tree has been open for a few months now so should have had time to iron out the bugs.

The menu is a bit limited for a Tapas Bar where you want to able to choose a variety of dishes. If you don't eat seafood the menu is very limited. Two beers, two dishes, coffee and dessert will set you back about $80.00.

The dishes we had - meat balls in a salsa sauce and Camambert Fondue with roast vegetables were nothing special. The meat balls very bland, but offset well by the spicey sauce. The Camambert Fondue was a failure. A whole Camambert wrapped in baking paper and presumedly heated in the oven, sounds like a great concept. However, instead of being soft and melted inside, the cheese in ours was only just warm, and very dry and crumbly - not very pleasant, and quite difficult to eat. Others that came out after ours showed slight browning on the baking paper so may have received the necessary warming.

The dessert plate is an interesting collection of sweet and tart flavours. The citrus candy-floss is a pleasant suprise, but the custard in the trifle was runny and the macaroon was a bit like chewing gum.

The biggest downside of the restaurant is the size of the tables for couples. They are OK if you like knocking knees with your partner all night, but not big enough for a relaxed slow dinner. When the weather warms up and the back deck is opened there may be more space.

Overall, I don't think we will return, despite the paucity of good dining options in Maitland.
