My Husband and I spent a night in Mill Room East to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary last weekend. We live about half an hour's drive from the hotel and booked very last minute. At the time, there was an offer where for an extra £50 or so per night a dinner allowance of £40 per person at the restaurant was included. If fine dining is your thing, this would be a great experience, however it's not for us and we decided to eat elsewhere in nearby Bury St Edmunds.
The main old mill building itself is very tastefully decorated; luxurious but still retaining that old lovingly restored charm. Within the building are the three Mill bedooms, restaurant, bar and reception and the other rooms are all located in two smaller buildings the other side of the car park. When we arrived, the first thing I noticed was how close the main building is to the road. Fortunately, it isn't a particularly busy road as we could hear traffic noise very easily from our room. If you really want a feeling of peace and quiet I would recommend either the Loft Suites, Water Meadow or Mill Stream rooms. The first thing my Husband commented on was that arriving at the reception felt like you were entering through the back door as it wasn't particularly striking or much of an entrance.
Our room however certainly made up for that, exuding the 'wow' factor with it's high ceilings, beautiful bathroom, stunning river view and comfy furniture. We certainly felt as though we were getting our money's worth as far as the room is concerned. Only minor point that I felt was a letdown was the size of the TV, which was very small compared to most hotels.
Breakfast was included and is enjoyed in the restaurant on the first floor. A fairly standard rendition of the traditional English breakfast, if I'm honest. There were some interesting starter options, but the main event was average.
Service was a bit hit and miss and I felt let down the experience slightly, hence 4 stars rather than 5. Reception greetings weren't particularly bad, or unpolite, just a bit strange in that staff need to be trained in how to respond to customers better i.e. they would continue to ask my Husband about our day, our plans etc. even though he really wasn't interested in sharing and gave short answers. It was a bit over friendly. At breakfast, upon our food arriving, we asked for some additional condiments and then waited at least 5 minutes and watched as the waitress continued to speak to other diners, take orders and bring food out etc. We then asked for more toast and expected to be brought extra butter without having to ask specifically as this should be obvious that we had already used the initial helping. However the afternoon we arrived my Husband asked if we could borrow a knife to eat some cake we'd brought up to the room and the member of staff also promptly delivered plates and cutlery and made sure these were replaced with fresh ones upon turndown. Very thoughtful.
We did one of the walks from the booklet on our second day, through the village and up to the heath. Lovely in the sunshine.
All in all a nice weekend away. Would return, though maybe to one of the Loft Suites. Another reviewer mentioned spa facilities and I agree, a small indoor pool with outdoor hot tubs would be a lovely addition!

We are currently looking at how we improve the reception area outside, and we have already improved the lighting and signage to make it more "striking".
Your constructive points over our rooms are also being reviewed and although our TV's are a good size we are looking to update them in the late part of this year. We are also trailing Apple TV in our loft suites and this will also be rolled out to all our rooms over the summer.
Your other comments have been passed to the team.
We look forward to welcoming you back (perhaps to one of our Loft Suites) in the near future
