“Comfortable hotel overlooking the lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2010

We managed to book 2 special offers so stayed for four nights. The hotel is conveniently situated for the 'Sound' trips and the visitor centre is next door.

Old and dated trash!! The hotel looks like sh... The staff looked very depressed, no wonder when you work at this dump.....
We first stay at room 101 (lakeview.....). This room is directly under the staircase and next to the laundry. So in the evening the noise is coming from all directions. At 22:00 we demanded another room, so we had to drag our stuff through the immense hall.
I don't understand that you want your guests to stay at this room. Well they realy don't give a ......
There is no atmosphere in the hotel, the bar was empty and a few lost people were having diner at the terrible restaurant.
Our tip is DON'T GO TO THIS HOTEL!!!!

We stayed here on our honeymoon tour of New Zealand. Our room was nice and very spacious, although the view was of the villas behind as Lake view rooms incurred and extra charge as did breakfast.
The location of the hotel was good, it overlooks the lake and is only a coulpe of minutes walk into the centre of Te Anau.
Parking was free but limited in the hotel grounds. Also in the grounds was an outdoor pool although it was not warm and did not appear too clean.

1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2010

Having been travelling for over a week around the South Island mixing it up with lodges and nice hotels, we arrived at the Distinction looking forward to one of the supposed best hotels in the area and of course, Milford Sound.

(Please note: this review is for the Distinction Te Anau, not the Distinction Luxmore, Te Anau, which is just up the street but is, confusingly, a different hotel).

To say this hotel was the most disappointing part of our entire holiday would be an understatement. The Distinction is distinctly terrible. Here are the list of complaints:

1) The staff have no concept of customer service. Perhaps its that the main hotels in Te Anau feel they don't have to try any more (as there are limited accomodation choices in Te Anau which people use as the jumping off point for visiting the Sounds) but the lack of care and slovenly attitude displayed by the staff was quite frankly, impressive. I was surprised the receptionists and hotel staff could keep their eyes open when I asked them questions as they looked so utterly bored with life.

2) The hotel is tired and looks like an Old Age Pensioners home or a mental ward from a bad film. My god - when was the last time they decorated this place - the 1960s??? I just looked again at the hotel photos on their website and these certainly do not reflect the old, worn out feel of this place.

3) The rooms: actually, the rooms are fine - relatively modern. The corridors leading to them are hideous however - again very old and dark - and there is no elevator to get you up and down.

4) Xmas dinner - ah yes. The low point of the entire vacation. We went to the supposedly plush hotel restaurant for xmas dinner and they quite rightly informed us that the food might be a little slow in coming out. Fair enough, we thought, it was xmas. It took an hour for them to give me a glass of wine. An hour. Seriously - how long does it take to pour a glass of wine? I could have driven to the vineyard, purchased a bottle, and brought it back quicker. Then, after 2 hours and repeated requests as to the location of our food (we had literally been served nothing), my wife and I gave up, complained to the manager (who, in his defence, was quite contrite), and left. You can imagine how happy we were to have to go hunting for dinner at 10pm on xmas day.

5) The spa. On Boxing Day, we were kind of rained in, so we decided to use the spa facilities. These facilities literally look like they hadn't been used (or cleaned) in several months. The jacuzzi and surrounding area was old and dirty and the changing rooms were cold and unwelcoming. The sauna, which we could access, we found to be switched off, with electric cables hanging exposed from the ceiling. It all seemed like a poor joke...

All in all therefore, I can categorically inform people that they should not stay here. Find one of the smaller motels in the area (which I have been told are quite nice) and stay there instead. If there is no room, I would recommend driving the 7-8 hours from Queenstown to Miflord Sound (and 7-8 hrs back again) rather than staying at this hotel. The Distinction is an embarassment and management should be ashamed to be running such a horrid place.

Dear Reviewer, I wish to acknowledge your review and on behalf of myself and my entire team apologise for your less than memorable experience while staying with us over the Xmas period.

We have conducted our own internal review and based on your comments and our own assesment, positive change has taken place.
I appreciate your comments and agree that our performance was very poor and you have every right to be extremly critical.

Kind Regards,

Brendan Cadigan.

The rooms were nicely updated; big tv's, nice bathroom, nice beds, nice decor. The outside was a different story though. The lobby, bar and restaurant have all been updated but the rest of the hotel looks like a 1960's hospital, excessivly long corridors, safety glass in the double swing doors, huge wooden stair case (no lift to the second story) and carpet on the walls. We even asked if it had been converted. Having paid the highest we could find for something a bit nicer than usual we were a little dissapointed. The restaurant was good although you have to order sides with your mains as there is extras, the waiter was also a little odd but with good intentions. The service desk was helpful and quite friendly.

We arrived at the hotel only a few days after they had reopened the hotel, and while most travelers would be concerned about staying in a hotel so very new, we were glad to help them work out the (few) kinks we encountered.

On the whole, the hotel is lovely! The lobby and dining areas are beautifully appointed, the rooms are spacious, the bathrooms are nicely done in marble, and the view from the front of the hotel is gorgeous. We were able to use their washing/drying machines easily, and the front desk staff was amazing in helping us get organized for local sightseeing. It seemed that staff was multi-tasking -- our server at breakfast was also serving us dinner at the sister hotel around the corner -- but their attention seemed effortless and extremely kind. We had a terrific experience at this hotel.
