“Nice cottage stayover”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2011

We stayed three nights in their "Rana" cottage while touring the area (particularly Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound). We're glad we did. The cottage was more modern than we had expected -- had lots of space and amenities for just the two of us, very comfortable bed, nice livingroom with wood-burning stove for the evening, big kitchen with all the tools. Just one bath though, so we guess that for its full capacity of 6 people it might get crowded. Great location just next to center of Te Anau. Ray and Leonie were friendly helpful hosts.
We also took Ray's offer to take us on a day trip to Milford Sound, which we went on with two other couples in a small but very comfortable bus up to the Sound. The boat was run by Mitre Peak Tours which we recommend -- smaller, more personalized than the "big" outfits that also run tours at Milford, and bit less costly as well. The Sound is spectacular in either rain or sunshine, in different ways. On the bus trip, Ray talked a bit too much, but then we think all tour guides do [i.e. let the scenery speak for itself], so that's partly just us. It wasn't a serious issue.

Found him very pushy regarding trips to Milford, even though we had already said we didnt want to do the tour.
Expected cottage to be new and modern as in pictures on the internet, but it was old and cold. Shower was terrible. Had a good fire but not enough fire wood. Plenty of blankets for bed, but froze all night as cottage was so cold.
No one around during the day, office was continuously locked.
Free Broadband and phone calls was great, but no phone was available in cottage so had to go to office.
As no servicing was done to cottage during the day, there was a lack of toilet paper.
Thought it was very over priced ($155/night). We could have gone back to Bella Vista which we stayed at last time for a cheaper, warmer stay.
Also, noisy locals, heard bass of stereo booming through cottage every day of visit...

These guests were given a 3 bedroom place as every thing else at the time was fully booked. They were also sent a document that explained that to them. The web site has images that are taken from the 3 bedroom place that these guests stayed in. Since this review we have over hauled our web site some what to distinguish more clearly the different properties. We appreciate that there may have been some confusion here and thank the guest for their input. The 30 year old cottage has new carpet and wallpaper with very comfortable beds. The three heaters and log fire are more than adequate to keep guests warm if they decide to use them. The fire has heaps of wood available and these people would have been made fully aware of this. If we know people are away for the day we have the log fire going for their return.
“him pushy” We assume they were referring to myself, (Ray) and we do promote the tours that leave Te Anau for a day in Milford Sound, as that is the safest scenic way to visit Milford Sound. I thank the guest for his comments on this and have reduced my “pushy” to “encourage” in the future. Because of the small nature of our accommodation business we cannot afford to have someone sitting in the office all day. There is a phone available for guests use 24 hours and clear instructions on how to attract the attention of one of our staff who are on duty from 7 in the morning until 10 at night. We are never “closed”.
Shower “terrible”. The shower over bath is connected to mains pressure and the controls for it are quite new. We supply a mini service with towels and toilet paper for our 3 bedroom places unless otherwise requested. A full service is given for the 1 bedroom cottages unless we are told otherwise. The guests only had to ask and this would have been rectified. March is a very busy time in Te Anau and if our guests felt they were being over priced at $155 it is a pity that we were not spoken to about this, especially when we hear only now that we had noisy neighbours. Although the young people are no longer our neighbours we would have spoken to them about the noise, had we been notified. The new quiet neighbours fit in well in this quiet community around us. We hope that readers of our reviews can read beyond this ‘not so good’ one as we seem to attract 95% of excellent reviews.

We stayed here in July 2009. This place was one of the best we have stayed at. Clean, fresh, smelled heavenly, no complaints. The linen and towels top notch. The owners were just wonderful. Only thing is if you want a bit of quiet, just beware that this place is on a busy road. We were there in the winter time so not as much traffic, but I anticipate there is more in the summer. We went on the Milford and Doubtful Sound Cruises and both times the buses picked us up at Birchwood Cottages. Will definately come back!

We spent 4 days at Birchwood, and visited Milford and Doubtful sound, as well as the glowworm caves in Te Anau. Superb day trips! We especially liked the Milford Sound trip with Fjordland Tours, owned and hosted by Ray from Birchwood Cottages. His personal touch and the relaxed way of doing things were just great. That's the way we like it!

Only stayed here for one night but very impressed on arrival. The owners were not there but no issue at all as there was a phone on the office door with a direct connection to there mobile phone. We were told where the key was and left to settle in. Later on the owners introduced themselves and offered to help with any excursions of Milford sound etc as they are also tour operators. Lovely self contained cottage with all the facilities including your own BBQ and Deck. Would have loved to stay longer but we had made other plans. Would definitely recommend for short or long stays.

First of all we only stayed for four nights yet we felt like there was so much more to see and do. Birchwood cottages was such a nice place to come home after exploring each day. We went for a day cruise on doubtful sound which was beautiful and amazing. We also drove out to Milford and did some bushwalking on the way which was fantastic. Ray and Leonie suggested a round trip along the southern scenic route which was a terrific drive.
Our self contained cottage was nice and close to the little tourist village of Te Anau so we could either walk to dinner or carry our groceries home from the shop.
Ray and Leonie were extremely helpful and the cottage was immaculate.
