“Cozy lodge, spacious rooms, friendly hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2009

Te Anau Lodge was everything we wanted from a B&B and expected from their website. The house is the last one on a quiet road in Te Anau with great views of the lake. The red brick exterior is warm and welcoming and the first floor rooms are large with views. The lounge on the same floor is comfortable and always stocked with cake, tea, coffee and wine, all included in the tariff. The computer in the lounge is a great add on. Matt and Chloe's sister , who were present during our 2 nights, are young and friendly - Matt gave us advice on things to do, which was always spot on. Breakfasts are ample, and served in a charming converted chapel, featured on the website. The grounds are extensive and we enjoyed walking around and also enjoyed being next door to the lake. This was a perfect place to spend our first 2 nights in South Island and was exactly what we wanted.

Some friends at theirs about thirty of them, assumed the magnificent task of moving a 1936 convent from its original location to the town of Te Anau, and then adapting it to what is nowadays the Te Anau Lodge. Matt, his wife and his sister, are the hosts in this 4 star plus accommodation.
Cheerful and always available, they have
arranged the place with 1930s and 1940s furniture, native New Zealand woods and a very interesting library. The price for the room includes huge breakfasts any time you like and a bar with hot and cold drinks 24 hours.

The Te Anau lodge is a beautifully-preserved former convent, now set up as a guest house with 6 comfortable rooms. There's a great deal to recommend here - the original architecture and authentic furnishings, the peace and quiet of the area, the comfort and amenities of the property. But the owners (Matt and Chloe) are really the stars here, managing to make guests feel right at home from the moment they walk in the door, without ever being overbearing. They both have an excellent knowledge of the area and can help out with your itinerary (as well as cooking a mean breakfast, which I'm sure caused me to gain five pounds). Everything is included in the accommodation price, including a forever-flowing beer, wine and soda supply, coffee station, home cooked cakes and muffins, and - of course - wireless Internet. After a day's exploration and hiking, returning to the Te Anau Lodge was really the closest thing to coming back home. Highly recommended.

We stayed at the Lodge as one stop on a two-week trip through the South Island and it was the nicest place we stayed. The setting is lovely, the owners are extremely helpful, and the rooms quite comfortable. The library is a very relaxing place to hang out. And the shower - always a telling detail after a long day tramping about - was absolutely first rate!

Was it a bit more expensive than the other places we stayed? Sure. But - consider what came with the stay, many of which would have led to additional expense at other places, but which came here with no extra charge (1) Unlimited Internet access (2) use of the laundry (3) Full, cooked breakfast (rated "Best in New Zealand by our hungry 21-year-old son!) (4) Excellent carrot cake, coffee, tea, and beer in the library (5) Spot-on advice from Matt & Chloe (they led us to places that we would not have otherwise found and very much enjoyed).

I only wish we could have stayed there longer.

We were very impressed with this beautiful B&B. The lodge, actually a convent school in another life, is large with expansive grounds and amazing views of the mountains and lake. Our room upstairs was nicely appointed with a modern bathroon and views to die for from our corner windows. There is an upstairs lounge for guests that provides a comfortable area to read, watch TV, play games and enjoy coffee, tea or brandy with cookies and cakes.

The breaksfast area used to be the chapel and has beautiful stained glass windows. The food was declicious with breads made by Chole and cooked eggs by Matt. Fruits, cereal and juices are also provided.

Matt and Chole went above and beyond to help us with any needs, including driving us into town when we didn't feel like doing the walk. (The walk into town is doable, but not as short as we thought it would be.) Matt was so helpful when my husband woke up with a bad back (not the fault of the bed) and drove us both to the pharmacy and health clinic.

We are determined to return soon and see the sights we missed because of the back problem and when we do we will definitely be staying here again.

On our 4 week trip through New Zealand Te Anau Lodge was our favourite place we stayed by far.
It is a beautiful old building (it used to be a convent) with lovely rooms and furnishings. There is a great library/sitting room with a fantastic collection of books and coffee and cake.
The library had stunning views of the lake and mountains.
The food was delicious - breakfast is held in the old chapel. We loved the still-hot blueberry muffins.
As other reviewers have noted though, it is the hosts who really made our stay special. Matt and Chloe are really kind and generous people and their lodge is very homely and full of warmth.
We thought that it was great value for money and will definately return on our next New Zealand trip.

This was definitely the best place we stayed during our 5 weeks in New Zealand. OK it is not cheap, but it is good value and is a house with lots of history and atmosphere. As we were the only guests Matt and Chloe made sure that we didn't feel lonely! The breakfast was incredibly fresh and good, lots of fruit and home baking. We loved our huge luxury room with 2 bathrooms (a free upgrade) and fabulously comfy bed. It was worth the effort to get out and see Doubtful Sound by kayak, and (on another day) to climb Mt Luxmore. Unfortunately we had booked ahead and couldn't extend our stay.
