There are two unusual things about this lovely two-storey building. Firstly it was a convent until not that long ago; secondly it was moved in four parts nearly 100 kms from its previous location to Te Anau in 2001. It has beautiful wood interior panelling, stairs and floors. Many original features have Ben retained, with beautiful stained glass windows in the breakfast room - and the original organ. The house is set in lovely huge gardens with a quaint little church at the bottom of the garden and superb views. We had the two front upstairs bedrooms, both of which are fantastic with large en-suite bathrooms, separate baths and showers, and these fantastic views through a wall of windows.
As others have said, there is a lovely large lounges upstairs with complimentary beers and wines. Breakfast is also all you would wish for.
George is a friendly and welcoming host, and a really nice guy. We rang ahead and he booked Doubtful and Milford Sound trips for us, which was far easier than trying to ring ourselves or do it on line. We dined at Redcliffes on two of the three nights we stayed at Te Anau - it was so good the first night that we went back on outlast night. It looks nothing special from the outside but the food is excellent. We much preferred it to The Fat Duck.
We toured New Zealand for 5 weeks and Te Anau Lodge is one of 3 absolutely stand-out places that we stayed. (The other two were Kauri Point near Taupo, and Te Puna Wai Lodge in Nelson).
This is a first rate place. Book it and you will not be disappointed.
