“Not up to expectation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014 via mobile

We dined at Redcliff on a recommendation and found the dishes we chose a little disappointing. The venison was not 'melt in your mouth' as expected and the salmon was over cooked. The dishes were well presented and accompaniments tasty. The service was too slow - to advertise that the service is to be expected to be slow is simply an excuse to use limited staff. It was full when we dined and they only used two waitresses plus one, with other duties, to service the customers. We had to ask for water, drinks and the bill and went to the cash register to pay after waiting for a long time. Such a shame as it has the potential to be so much better.

“A good restaurant, very popular”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2014 via mobile

We were recommended to try this restaurant by the hotel we were staying in and so decided to check it out late afternoon with a view to dining there in the evening. Were told they were fully booked but could try later to see if they could fit us in. We called in at 7pm and sure enough were given a nice booth type table - our luck was in. I started with the Stewart Island oysters (3 for 24 NZ dollars). These were the biggest oysters I've ever tried and were delicious - plump, juicy and tasting of the sea.
One main was rib-eye steak, which was a quality cut, cooked well (perhaps a little too much fat but that might be nit-picky). Croquettes with a bone marrow centre were a novel accompaniment and these too were delicious.

The other main was fish of the day. I have to admit to being disappointed here - a freshly caught fish from the sea nearby, simply cooked is unbeatable in my view. Here the dish was far too over-complicated and the fish was almost an after thought, hidden amongst a variety of accompaniments. What 2 hard boiled eggs are doing on this plate I do not know.

Overall this is a good restaurant, the staff and service were both excellent but the menu seemed somewhat restricted. So for us on this visit, it is fair to say, the experience did not truly meet our expectations.

“excellent food and great atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2014

We waited a while for a table, but well worthwhile. The best venison and salmon in NZ! We chatted with a local sheep farmer, a couple from the North Island and a Filipino-German couple living in Sudan! So local and international clientele which this restaurant catered to with ease. Just excellent food.
