“Okay but most expensive whilst in NZ - perhaps we are over picky?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2010

After travelling from the top of the North Island and spending no more than one or two nights in accommodation we decided to settle at Te Anau rather than Queenstown for 3 nights. Accommodation was hard to find and we had learnt to book ahead when we arrived in Christchurch. The view from our balcony was lovely - a beautiful lake with sunsets and sunrises that were awesome. The rooms however were outdated - yes a little like my grandmother too! Very little bench space and minimal cooking/kitchen facilities. We wanted self contained so we would relax, cook at home and take in the ambience of the lake. A microwave and 2 hotplates, no dishwasher (not what we would call luxury apartments). Further, and we take note from a previous review re fish smells, in the compendium were notes guests cooking and that fish, curry and chilli should not be cooked and that guests could be fined for doing so. Mmmmm...made us worry about pasta smells and toast. This accommodation was the dearest of all our stops in 15 days and at $210 a night, think is over priced? The bedroom was great as was the bed - but why would you have a partly partioned bedroom where the light streams in? Like most of the hotels/motels/apartment in New Zealand that we stayed with there was no air conditioning? Seemed to be a common theme? In this particular case however, leaving a window open was not a major problem as there was no traffic noise, although building work did start rather early. Would probably recommend but would check prices against other motels/hotels. Definitely paying for the view.

Our first choice was sold out so we settled for Campbell's after reading TA reviews. The Good: Location- beautiful views and short walk into town and glow worm cave tour.
Otherwise, the good end's there. First off, our room smelled like fish. Apparently the last guest had made fish and the smell still filled the room. We complained and were given a room deoderizing spray which smelled just as bad as the fish.
Second, the heat went out while we were there. Not a big deal as it wasn't a cold night but still, what if it had been in winter? And the front desk closes early in the evening so forget about popping in to ask a question.
The rooms themselves are seriously dated- filled with mismatched, cheap furniture- felt like I was back at my grandma's house in the 1970's.
Also, there is NO HOUSEKEPPING. If you want your room made up during your stay, you have to pay for it. What a joke.
Te Anau itself has little to offer except as a jumping off point for Milford Sound and it doesn't seem like there are a lot of hotels to choose from in the area but if you are looking to spend a night or two, I think you can do better than Campbells.

We had a fantastic stay in a spacious room opening out onto a view of beautiful Lake Te Anau, very comfortable bed, fully equipped kitchen with everything you need, modern bathroom and provided excellent service to arrange activities in the area. We'll definitely be back! Thanks for making our stay so nice. Ben & Leila, London.

This motel provides spacious appartments each with a balcony or patio overlooking the lake. Our first floor unit had four rooms: a large sitting room with a dining table, comfortable arm chairs &, in one corner, a kitchenette with 2 hobs, fridge-freezer & a microwave. There was a bathroom & a separate WC. The back room however was a combined corridor & bedroom. The glazed entance door had no curtain so if you like sleeping in the dark you will be out of luck. A beam runs across the "room" so we hung the super king-size bed cover over it to try to create a cosier "bedroom".
The units are not serviced, but in general I thought they were good value.

very surprised that the room is so spacious, only minor discomfort is the heater is not that warm though we tune it up to the maximum. Had a neat kitchenette, living room facing the lake, very near the city centre and real journeys booking centre for cruises ( can walk there in 5mins). staff is very friendly and assuring, when we lost their room key, they are very cool about it though we are very terribly sorry for the loss of the room key.
Great stay , would choose this place if we were to return to te anau :)

This hotel is in a great location. Construction was going on with one of the rooms and the entire front of the building was being cleaned. No information was posted on the website. In all fairness they allowed us to move to another hotel. Ask before you book

We stayed at Campbell's for two nights with the sole purpose of travelling to Milford Sound (rather than having to do this from Queenstown). The room is quite dated, however it is very spacious and quiet with a wonderful view of the lake, which is great as we really were only there to sleep! While we were there, some renovation work was being completed to the external building as well as some unused rooms so it looks like the accommodation will be updated sometime in the future.
