“This 3 day 2 night tramp is a must do!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2012

This hike was the highlight of our two weeks on the south island. The views are incredible, and most of day 2 is above treeline where you can see 360 degrees of unspoiled natural beauty. Make sure to do the two optional side trips to key summit and conical hill, they are well worth the effort. We went with Ultimate Hikes so we had great guides, hot showers, cold beers and comfortable beds at the end of the day. You can arrange to do the hike independently too, either way, don't miss it!

“Wow Wow Wow”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2012

Loved this track. Had snow in January on first day. Then stunning weather. Harris Pass and Conical Hill were stunning with lovely views. Lake McKenzie was a great place for a brief swim. Loved this walk. Do it.

“Wonderful alpine scenery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

Our family did a 3 day hike from the Divide toward Queenstown. Stayed one night at MacKenzie hut and another at Routeburn Falls. The scenery was amazing, huts comfortable (need DOC reservations), and trails well maintained with very moderate changes in elevation. We had no problems covering distance with full packs - in plenty of time (we're in our 50's). We were required to take a helicopter over the highest part of trail because of avalanche warnings - but it added to the fun for everyone. We did need full rain gear and warm down/fleece coats, hats, gloves, etc. I would recommend hiking in this direction as the views to the mountains, ocean, and valleys were primarily in front of us. Also highly recommend using Trackhopper (MIchael Stone) to shuttle car from start to where you finish. They were totally reliable and careful with our rental car. A pleasure to deal with and saved us long day of driving and catching bus back and forth. Well worth it - glad I found them from someone else's review.

“The highlight of our NZ trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2011

My husband and I spent 10 days in the south island around the Christmas and new year holiday. We did the 3-day-2-night Routeburn tramping trip and we were absolutely impressed with the views. It's definitely the highlight of our trip. We were awe-struck at every corner we turned. We were fortunate to have perfect sunny weather the entire trip which I believe is quite a rare occasion. The DOC huts are very comfortable with flushing toilets, gas stove, bunk beds. My husband planned the trip that we spent a few days with a rental car traveling to Mt cook and around and in Queenstown. Then returned the rental car and traveled to Doubtful sound and Milford sound day trips with Real Journeys. They dropped us off at Te Anau in between. We had them drop us off at the divide to start the Routeburn trip after the Milford sound cruise. Luckily it was the longest day of the year since we started the routeburn kinda late (3pm) but there were sunlight till 10 pm that day. We managed to getthe key summit side trip in as well on the first day. You should not miss this side trip. That saved us a lot of transportation cost in between. We hiked the reverse trip than most people, as we saw a recommendation in here ( from the divide to Routeburn shelter near queenstown). I agree that this is a better route for two reasons, first the view is better and the trip from the shelter to queenstown is much shorter than a trip from the divide to Queenstown. We hired Buckleys transportation to pick us up from the Routeburn shelter back to queenstown for $45 a person. They even stopped for a miliion dollar photo-op on the way. We highly recommend using Buckley transport. They provide trasnportation for trampers around the area and also run a B&B.
