“Doubtful Sound must be seen (and heard and tasted) to be believed.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

You hear all the time how wild and natural New Zealand is, then you go to a place like Doubtful Sound and you see it and feel it. First trip was rainy and misty and spectacular. Second trip was sunny and scenic and spectacular. Third trip started sunny, went misty and mysterious, then snow on the Wilmot Pass. Only one word to describe it... Spectacular. The total immersion of your senses in this place is a lifetime "must do". You come away exhausted at the end of the day, even though you spend most of it sitting and looking at the scenery.

“Highlight of our trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012 via mobile

We weren't sure to go and do the doubtful trip as the price is steep at a 235$ a person. I'm glad however that we did. The crew on bus and boat are nice and you don't get the feeling that they rush you in and out for to make quick money.

The sounds itself are one of a kind. Super impressive nature and we encountered dolphins and rare penguins. At one point everyone is asked to remain silent and all the engines are turned off. It is a rare occasion that you can enjoy the sound of nature and nothing but that, no planes no other boats, nothing. I'd definitely go again.

“Unbelievable Experience--Can't miss this!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

We did the overnight Doubtful Sound cruise with Real Journeys and I'm so happy we did. The extra time to explore the fiords (vs just a day trip) allowed for the tour to be more leisurely, and we were really able to get some great photo shots. The evening was cloudy and misty which made for some neat photos, but the morning was crystal clear blue skies and absolutely beautiful with the amazing reflections on the water.

The food was unexpectedly amazing...for a boat trip! It was soooooo good and lots of variety. They had a carving station and even soup appetizers in the afternoon (after we finished our kayaking trip).

The boat gets cold if you want to be outside (and I was outside most of the daylight hours because it was so beautiful). Make sure to bring warm clothes and a good camera (wide angle lens is good).

Tips:
- Do the quad share if you don't mind sharing. It's not that bad and it's only for one night.
- Bring WARM clothes. Beanie to keep your head warm, lots of layers (down jacket), rain jacket (rains often and unexpectedly), and gloves to keep your fingers closed when your taking pix outside (you can buy opossum fur gloves in NZ). Bring warm clothes to sleep in too.
- Bring a good camera (DSLR) and some lenses (wide angle and zoom lens for animals)

P.S. We did the Milford Sound Day Trip the following day and it did not compare. There were so many boats and the weather wasn't great, so being out there for only 2 hours didn't allow enough time for the weather to clear. It's all about luck in the fiords, as far as weather goes.
P.S.S. The Real Journey Doubtful Sound Trip wasn't worth it.

“Almost Beyond Words! Glorious!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

We traveled with "Real Journeys," a wonderful tour provider. We left from Te Anau by bus and went to Pearl Harbour on Manapouri Lake. "Real Journeys"provided a gourmet box lunch that was to die for. Our ship today was one of the most modern, large catamarans that I have ever been on - definitely "state of the art." We literally flew over Lake Manapouri to a dock on the Lake's West Arm. The scenery was breathtaking enroute. After we docked, we boarded a bus for a trip over Wilmot Pass. We stopped to take pictures of Doubtful Sound over 1700 feet below us. Then we descended to our next catamaran, equal to the first one we took. The weather was marvelous and we made the majority of the cruise out to the mouth of the Tasman Sea during a "blue sky" day. On the return the weather deteriorated. We saw very few waterfalls, unlike our rainy day experience on Milford Sound!

“Been here twice......it's must be awesome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

We went to Doubtful Sound twice with Real Journey Overnigth Cruise. They were a lot better experiences than Milford Sound. The place is just simply stunning! The part that I like the most is when you go out in a small kayak, it makes you realise how small human being is.
