I stayed for 5 nights in the Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers Lodge in March 2009. The hostel is located in one of the most picturesque locations I experienced on my trip. Step outside the hostel and you are met by the wonderful sight of the shores of Lake Te Anau. To be honest I was so spellbound by the scenery that the hostel itself could have been a hole and I would still have enjoyed my stay. But luckily it turned out to be quite nice.
I stayed in a double room with private facilities - basically a bathroom with shower and a small kitchen area with 2 stove rings and a sink (no oven although you can also use the communal kitchen which has all the facilities you need). It was quite basic but on a par with your average backpackers hostel room. My room had a tv although the reception was bad and only 2 channels were watchable.
The staff were friendly and always willing to offer advice on what to do in the area and to book trips for their guests. Taking of which, make sure you do one of the Milford Sound kayaking trips - I did one with Roscos Kayaks and it was an unforgetable experience.
One annoyance (with Te Anau itself not the hostel) was the amount of scenic flights that leave from the small township. I know it is very picky of me but the noise of the endless parade of planes and helicopters began to annoy me after a while as they somewhat spoilt the otherwise quiet serenity of the area. But of course I understand why they are so popular.
So to sum up - I would definately recommend that you spend a bit of time in Te Anau and, if you do, then this hostel is probably as good a place to stay as any.
