“Big dissapointment, refused to stay here.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2013

We booked 6 motels for our trip around the South Island in New Zealand. This was the ONLY dissapointing one.

We were in a block of holiday appartments. First of all, we got into the door very easily, the key was hardly needed. This concerned by partner so he fiddled around with it a bit once we got in, and soon came to the conclusion that anybody could get into our room without the correct key, without much trying. I went into the bathroom at this point to wash my hands, and try the the shower. Neither produced hot running water, even after 5 mins of the shower running. We then tried the tap in the kitchen, the same problem. We also noticed in the kitchen that there was a plug socket hanging off the wall. This meant we knew we didn't want to stay there as a working door lock, hot water and safe appliances are surely a mandatory and simple thing. We went to reception and she was very moody when we explained whats wrong, untill we refused to stay there. Before going to reception, we checked out the pool area (not sure how people are raving about this, if i had kids there would be no way i'd let them in there), the handles were rusty and the whole area seemed very dated and not looked after-god knows what you'd get from going in there. The whole place was extremely dated and theres no reason for it, with competition you'd think you'd want to keep the standards up, this was a very tacky place to stay. So we managed to get a room at "Lakefront Lodge", who had a very helpful and welcoming lady to greet us, and a lovely clean, comfortable room for our stay. She did mention that a lot of visitors had complained about Fiordland motels. We had originaly booked 2 nights stay at Fiordland, so that we could stay the night we got there (from Queenstown), go to Fiordland Milford Sound the next day, stay the night there again and then move on. Instead, sadly Lakefront lodge only had one night available, so we instead did milford sound the next day and then drove all the way to Queenstown, to stay at the lovely Hilton Kawarua again (only $20 more, so again i don't know why people think this hotel is good value for money). I really would not recomend this motel i'm afraid.

Stayed here on a budget. Room was all we needed - bathroom a bit tatty, but lots of things to do downstairs bar & big games room & the jacuzzis in the glass poolhouse were brilliant! Great value for money i'd say!

We stayed here for 3 nights in a room just a few metres away from the main complex. We had our own small kitchen area and balcony looking towards the lake & mountains. The bathroom area was a bit cramped and dated but for what we paid we can have no complaints. It was about a 10-15 minute walk to the main area for food etc. Overall very good value.

this place surprised me,after staying here years ago,it has been refitted etc and is awesome now and competes with all the rest in town, modern style rooms flat screen tvs good outlook from our room, was going to have breakfast her at $12.50 per person but e mail came back to say book now as breakfast very busy on a friday and it was $15,well i cancelled that as breakfasts in the town are around $10,from what i saw the breakfast was not even on on friday as only 2 lots in the whole complex,i know the road was shut but even so we not on a tour must be treated equally as we here on business and can be repeat business, great for a special deal

Room Tip: you must be keen on walking or have a car, a wee way from the town centre, need to check on restauran...

Fiordland motel is not fancy and does need renovating, but it was clean and comfortable - ticked the boxes...
It's on outskirts of town, so a car is useful.
Great views over the mountains and close to the lake.
It's not somewhere to spend the day relaxing in the room / hotel, but for a base while travelling to Milford Sound or around Lake Te Anu it's ideal.

I stayed for one night - in the hotel section, where the room had obviously been recently refurbished and was clean with good quality bed linen - pretty basic facilities, but nothing even remotely similar to the last 2 reviews. The place was dead, about 6 cars total - the hotel public areas were clean but deserted. Don't stay here for any atmosphere - I stayed as the rate via a web booking site was tremendous value and I just needed a clean bed for the night.

Easy walk/ drive into town for a range of places to eat.

This place was awful, it looked nothing like the pictures on the internet. I can not even begin to say how much I disliked this place. The room smelt bad, furniture very very old and the room looked dirty. I was so discusted I couldn't even go back and ask for our money back we walked out and went and stayed somewhere else.

I am no princess and dont mind roughing it a bit but this pushed me over the edge.

I would recomend driving straight past this place and not looking back.

Room Tip: A room not at this motel
