“Incredible Italian Food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012 via mobile

We are sadly nearing the end of our 3 week vacation in New Zealand, and have finally found an amazing Italian restaurant! The salmon fettuccini was fresh and delicious, and the tiramisu was surprisingly the best I can remember - hard to find good quality tiramisu any more. We definitely plan to return before we leave

“Best Italian Food I've Had in NZ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

My credibility for this review: My in-laws are Italian-American, I've traveled extensively in Italy (particularly Piemonte), and I'm a serious home cook making a lot of regional Italian food. I'm now living in New Zealand, and while I love this country with all my heart, it suffers a bit from not having enjoyed a lot of Italian immigration (unlike its neighbor across the Tasman). Thank goodness, then, that we found this place quite by accident on a recent trip to Te Anau. The other place that was recommended was full, and as we were walking down the street, the owner of La Dolce Vita stepped out onto the sidewalk and greet us with a hearty "buona sera!" We figured we'd give it a go, and it was just like being in a real Italian trattoria or osteria. The owner and his son were bustling around waiting on tables and bantering with customers, and they were patient with my rusty Italian. More to the point, the food was spot-on. I had what they called fettucine, but was closer to papardelle, with a venison ragu, and it was exactly as it would be in Northwest Italy. My son had a bit of an Italian-NZ fusion dish -- penne with a smoked chicken cream sauce -- and it was excellent. The antipasto platter had well-sourced meats and cheeses. As it should be in a real Italian place (always order vino rosso della casa!), the house wine was excellent, although there were lots of good choices on the wine list as well. Prices were very reasonable given the quality of the dinner. The only criticism I could possibly offer is that the strip mall location isn't the most charming, but once you're inside you won't notice.

What a great restaurant! Excellent, authentic food. And Roberto is a hoot! Don't be in a hurry, but come to enjoy a wonderful dinner.

“great pasta and very nice Italian owner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2012

The pasta was self-made and tasted great (like in Italy). The wine selection was fully aligned to the menu and also the desert was highly recommandable. Additionally, you get the charm of an Italian owner who makes everyone smile or even laugh. It's funny to get the mood of Italy at the other end of the world. Highly recommendable.

“Very good Italien food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2012

The food and service here were excellent. The only downside was the extra charge as it was a bank holiday. We knew nothing about this until our bill arrived. Had we known at the outset there was going to be an extra charge we probably would have gone elsewhere. It was pointed out to us when we complained, that there was a sign on the entrance door explaining this, but as the door was open and we were greeted at the door by the owner, we did not see a sign, there was nothing written on the menu and it was not pointed out to us. Spoilt what was a very enjoyable evening. It is worth noting that not all restaurants charge extra on bank holidays and we realised that they were the one,s that were full!!
