“Can I give six stars please?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

I am a bird watcher with a patient wife. We booked the Bird Watching Bonanza on Stewart Island and needed somewhere to stay. As soon as I contacted Wendy Hallett by e-mail, we knew that 'this was the one'.

We had lots of great B&B's in our month in New Zealand and this was right up there in terms of the accommodation. The room is large and comfortable, good sized bathroom, balcony overlooking the bay, the sleep quality top notch, the towels and bed linen crisp, cleanliness to the point of gleaming and so on. You also have a great lounge.

But the thing that REALLY distinguishes this place is Wendy. We knew that she was a character from her e mails, but when we got to the plane depot and she was there with a little white board saying 'welcome Terence and Janet" our suspicions of character were borne out. We were the only ones getting off the plane! (OK there was one local as well). She then bundled us into her car and took us on what she described as a tour of the Central Business District.... this is the two streets that make up Oban. And her house was all of 300 metres from the plane depot. Wonderful introduction.

We went on the bird watching trip and she took us to the quay for departure at 0900 after our breakfast. The chap leading the bird walk - Matt Jones - on seeing us get out of her car said "AAAAH...you'll have had the legendary breakfast?" And we had. You won't need to eat all day.The breakfast is just something else, and all cooked to please you (not - this is what you have to have).

Wendy's family have been Stewart Islanders for several generations and it was seriously interesting to hear some of the island history. But don't get the idea that Wendy is always in your face. She is quite capable of leaving you to yourself if that is what you want.

She is the perfect hostess, in a very comfortable house, in a magic location. You couldn't want for more. For all your time on Stewart Island you will be greeted with "you're the people staying with Wendy aren't you?" and a warm smile.

We were lucky enough to enjoy Wendy's warm hospitality and delicious food in her beautiful home she shares with her guests. The house is beautifully appointed and tastefully furnished with objets d'art and antiques. All guest rooms have an ensuite and the view from the lounge is absolutely magnificent. Would definitely recommend giving Wendy a visit.

Four of us shared Wendy's home for 5 nights in Steward Island. The beds were so comfortable, the bathrooms roomy, and the views breathtaking. Wendy is like a mum with a cheeky sense of humor. She's a delightful host, as engaging as you wish, or happy to sense your need for privacy. Breakfast is as delicious and as hearty as you wish. Cocktails on her porch as most memorable.

Do make sure you look at her lovely garden, which has a sign inviting anyone walking about to stroll in. What does that say about dear Wendy?

Room Tip: There are only two guest rooms and both are fine.

First time for us on Stewart Island and staying with Wendy made it extra special. She is so helpful with all her local knowledge and nothing is too much trouble. She will arrange trips for you and ensure that you make the most of your stay on the Island. The breakfasts are superb and whilst it may seem a tad expensive it is worth every penny! Chris and Penny

Room Tip: Both rooms excellent with great views.

Greenvale is an excellent base from which to discover the wonders of Stewart Island. It is at a comfortable walking distance from Oban with a lovely view on the bay. Wendy was very helpfull in pre-travel advice and in giving all sorts of advice on what to see or do on the island while we were there.

Adding to that the beautiful room, impeccable "limo-service", excellent breakfast, the quiteness of the setting, the pre-diner talks providing a real inside and warm view of NZ life turned this into one of the best stays at a B&B of the many we experienced already across the world.

We were sad we had to move on, but hopefull we once might go back there.

First time for me beeing on Stewart Island.I´ve had a wonderful stay at Greenvale B&B.
Wendy Hallet the owner is very engaged and helps to organize booking trips, restaurant and all the other "little things". She makes it for you a bit like feeling home.
From Greenvale you have a wonderful view to the Halfmoon Bay.
If you are looking for real nature you have a lot of options.
Kiwi spotting or Bird watching on Ulva Island are some of them.
So finally I can recommend Greenvale B&B and Stewart Island!
