“Eloping to Port of Call to wed January 2014”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2014

My husband & I chose to elope a long time ago & circumstances let us find Port of Call in Google, immediately we made inquiries with Philippa & Ian & knew this was the right choice. Philippa & Ian helped us with our eloping arrangements, Celebrant, Florist, Photographer and Hairdresser. We were picked up from the Ferry by Philippa who was an excellent guide showing us all the sites we needed to check out on our stay. The Bach perfect and leaving us with the 4 wheel drive to use on our visit. The Bach completely private, diesel pot belly to heat us up - amazing heater. Idyllic accommodation choice in Oban. Attention to detail from Philippa down to heart soaps in the Bathroom. A perfect place to stay at in Jenson Day/Halfmoon Bay,. Stewart Island. We will be back, idyllic times need to be tripadvisored.

Room Tip: The Bach is bliss ;)

Completely private, lost in the bush, yet 5 minutes walk from the village centre. This amazing nugget is probably the best accommodation choice in Oban. Ian and Philippa are great hosts that give you enough attention or leave you alone, as you require. The cottage was spotless, fireplace prepared to start with a single match, all kitchen equipment you might need, even a rugged cell phone (there is only Telecom signal in Oban). I am going again, that's for sure ;)

Note: The photos of the birds were taken from the porch and from the access footpath.

Stayed at Turner Cottage for several days after walking the Rakiura Track. A perfect place to stay at in Stewart Island. Set in the bush with abundant bird life. Philippa and Ian were great hosts and seemed only to happy to do anything to make our stay as enjoyable as it was. An awesome place to stay in a special part of the country.

Turner Cottage is buried in the trees above Oban village, with Kaka, Tui, Blackbirds and Silvereye visiting and entertaining us, morning and evening. Situated on a steep walk from the road, the Cottage was not without challenges, but Ian made us welcome, did our washing when the machine broke and organised guide and wildlife photographer Matt Jones to guide us birdwatching on Ulva Island, just off Stewart Island. Free transfers to/from the ferry terminal were included - in fact, Ian left us his 4WD to drive to the morning ferry when we left. Plus, he left us a mobile phone, as ours had no coverage on SI. Trust builds business.

I stayed in Turner Cottage for 3 nights in March 13 and thought it was fabulous. It is in an excellent location, close to Oban township. It was so relaxing and there are some great walks on Stewart Island. I enjoyed having a wood fire and being able to sit outside on the deck watching the beautiful birds fly around and come and visit. I would definitely visit Turner Cottage again.

Owned by Philippa and Ian Sutherland. 'Pip', as she is known, sent us a lovely email before we came saying she regretted that she wouldn't be there when we arrived. But we met by accident at Invercargill airport - a cheerful, happy woman, a good start. Then Megan collects us at the island airstrip terminal (which is not at the plane but in town). She gives us a tour of Oban, the main community centre, and talks us through the places we should see, where we should go. She drives us up the long no-exit road to the Bach, tucked away in the trees and beautifully appointed. We are given the keys to a great old diesel 4WDrive antique and then left alone, which is what we wanted. Barry drove us back to the terminal. A totally wonderful stay. Only sorry not have visited Megan's interesting shop. Thanks to all. Pyper and Peggy

Room Tip: We were in the Bach, set off from the house (which apparently has a grand room and you get breakfast...

Turner Cottage where do you start without writing a book?
Our Hosts Pip and Ian what a dynamic couple they truely know how to give exceptional customer service to their guests. Thankyou soo much for going the extra mile.Oyster opening, Pub Quiz and our trip to Ulva and Ocean Beach not to mention a quided tour on the Island. You guys made our weekend uniquely special.
Turner Cottage itself is situated so close to the town but you feel like your miles away from everything nestled in the bush. The resident birdlife are such a bonus,
The cottage has everything you would hope for and more not to mention the lovely decor and immacuetly clean its a real testament to your hard work.
Keep up the good work you are a credit to the Island.
We will be back
