Like recent reviewers, we thought this place was amazing. Some of the highlights were:
- one of the warmest welcomes I have ever had. I was immediately made to feel a very special guest.
- a wonderful view that delighted at any time of the day.
- instant access to the best local knowledge about walks, wildlife, history, excursions etc
- good internet (free) and mobile phone reception.
Our host, Jo, does a magnificent job. She was always there - first thing in the morning, last thing at night, whenever, constantly providing a brilliant service. One wonders when or if she sleeps!! Her cheerful can-do demeanour brightened even the dullest day.

Stewart Island seems a long way from anywhere and that is some of what makes it special. To find S.I. Lodge in this far corner of the world is very special. We hope to come back again one day.

Five stars on all assessment levels! Jo and Wayne, who have run the Lodge since August 2008, are superb hosts. The rooms are very comfortable and well-equipped and have simply amazing views over Halfmoon Bay. Although just a short walk down to Oban village, Jo and Wayne are there to greet you at the Wharfside by car to eliminate bag problems. The breakfasts are excellent as cocktails in the evening. Jo and Wayne know everything about Stewart Island and surrounding islands like Ulva and happily give expert advice, organize visits and fix trips. No cellphone coverage on the Island but the Lodge has WiFi access included. We would not change a single thing. An unforgettable experience.

This was my third stay at the S.I.L. the first under the new owners (Real Journeys, a very good company ) What a difference with Jo and Wayne now managers, Wayne met us (7 of us ) after our Pattersons inlet tour something I wasn't expecting, nothing was too much trouble, pre dinner drinks were served later than usual after I mistook the time and told my clients 6.30pm no problem says Jo 6.30 it is then. The Lodge has been refurbished and is looking great, and still enjoys that supurb location looking out over Halfmoon bay, all my clients loved it. Keep up the good work Jo and Wayne.

Under new management so ignore the negative comments made before august 2008: Jo and Wayne have made the Lodge a holiday paradise on this beautiful island. Comfortable room with outstanding views. Excellent breakfast. Drinks and canapes with fellow guests at 5 pm a surprising bonus to the holiday. With 22 years + experience on the island, Jo and Wayne were able to inform about and book all sorts of activities on Stewart Island. A perfect break. Thank you guys!!
