Driving from Wanaka to Queenstown for our last nights stay before we were to fly off to Auckland, the thought of the type of hotel I booked was always on my mind. Booking a resort that has just opened in December 2008, still in completion stage of its restaurant, I was a bit concerned that my gut instinct of booking a new apartment-hotel will let me down.
Looking at the amazing view queenstown has to offer, it was a bit difficult to find this hotel, as I could not see any signpost clearly labelling the location of this hotel. Driving past it 2wice, and then i noticed a small sign to my left off Frankton Road saying 'Oaks Ridge Resort'. I quickly indicated and managed to go down a smallish hill to the lobby. Now, there were no signs here which clearly indicated where the reception area was. After 5 mins of driving down to their carpark and driving up again I managed to locate their reception
The guy at reception was great. He checked us in and took a $100 deposit (as a bond) for the room. He directed us to our room (Room 104) and we drove down to the underground parking.
After unloading our suitcases, we found the lift, but this lift only took us up from floors 5 - 9... My wife and I confused, we didnt know how to get to level 1. We saw another door across the parking lot which was a fire exit, and thought why not check if that goes down to our floor. As we entered we realised that there we were on level 4 and found the lift which took us down to floor 1.
Please note that floors 1 - 4 are seperate to floors 5 - 9. For example you will need to change lifts if your on floor 1 and you want to get to floor 8.
As we got to our room, i was somewhat unimpressed with the greyish walls and thought to myself, oh m y god what have I booked. As we got to the door and swiped our card, the door would not open... This really got me worried, so I telephoned the reception boy and he came right down with new cards (as the cards he gave us were not activated).
As he opened the door to my room, my jaw almost dropped!! I walked into a lavishly designed penthouse apartment unit. It was absolutely beautiful. It had 3 bedrooms (not 2), underfloor heating, plasma TV, brand new kitchen with a fridge, Three bathrooms, Leather Couches.. The apartment was huge! The view was amazing, views you would die for! Beds were comfy, and they even had a washing machine, dryer, microwave, dishwasher & ofcourse not to forget a Fireplace...
We had plans to go out that night into queenstown and do the gandolas, because we felt soo comfortable in the room we grabbed pizza from pizza hut and brought it back to our room.
The room opens up to a small courtyard at the back and has stairs that go down to the lake. Well you kinda have to go down a small bank at the bottom to reach the lake.
This apartment/hotel is absolutely amazing. I will be sharing my pictures of this place with all once i download them from my camera. If you are travelling with a group of ppl, this room can easily accommodate 6 adults on beds, and the lounge is big enough to hold couple others in sleeping beds.. The fireplace is excellent and kept us warm at night, as it gets kinda chilly even in summer. All rooms are private and seperate from the living areas.
This is the best accommodation i have stayed at. They rate themselves a 4 star but to me I rate this hotel as a 5 star + hotel
