“Doesn't quite meet its claims”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014

We really enjoyed the locatiom only a few minutes walk from the center of town.
However the room and buildings are in need of some maintenance and scaffolding is being erected at the moment. The service of the staff is only average. If you have breakfast included it is ambiguous as to what you can eat and you need to watch out for them unexpectedly adding money to your bill or embarrassing you once you have dished up food.

BEWARE wifi charges! We were in NZ for 2 weeks at 7 different accommodations and Peppers was the only one that didn't offer some free wifi. In fact the cheapest wifi was $15 for 2 hours. My son and I logged in on 2 phones and an iPad and the next morning we were charged 3 x $15 even though we chose 'extra device' and we logged in within the first hour. After some negotiation at the desk I only paid for one charge. However given that the rest of NZ seems to provide some free wifi, Peppers needs to keep up. Otherwise the room was great, lovely view, clean and neat, great location and on special the price is good.

Hi - this is my 2nd visit here (and 2nd review) which I booked through expedia. This time around it would have been disastrous had I not complained.
Be careful with the expedia deal as it advertises it as lake and mountain view, yet when I arrived they put me in an end corner room with no view whatsoever. This was very disappointing after my first fantastic experience there.
Went to talk to indian receptionist who was proving to be no help at all. Spoke to duty manager who upgraded me to a 2 bedroom suite with absolutely stunning lake views, full kitchen, marble bathroom with view over lake. This was much appreciated and he was well tipped for his consideration.

I stayed 2 nights. The first morning I had breakfast delivered to my room and it was missing a lot of items. The 2nd morning I went to the breakfast room and the breakfast was fantastic.

This is a fabulous well located place to stay if you get the right room.

Room Tip: Request a lake view room

One word sums up Peppers Beacon in Queenstown and that word is simply: Amazing.

Great location right on the Esplanade and 5 mins from the main town, Peppers Beacon has views across the lake to die for and is very well presented. On arrival, my partner and I were feeling rather hot and bothered from a long drive and we were immediately presented with a refreshing glass of juice - we didn't even need to ask. We were then informed that we had been upgraded to a Suite - what an amazing surprise and a nice way to end our trip of New Zealand.

The room was gorgeous with a balcony giving us a view across the lake to wake up to - also perfect for stargazing with a bottle of wine. The gas fire was also a nice touch, making us wish it was chilly so we could turn it on.

At breakfast I let the Manager know that I have a Gluten Allergy and was presented with some Gluten Free toast within minutes. Very pleased with this as often I am met with blank stares or the option of just leaving the bread out. My only criticism is that the breakfast cheese and meats were not replenished even though other guests were still coming in however this was not long before they were due to close so I can understand the rationale behind this.

All in all - great stay and we will be back again! Thanks to the team for making our holiday special!!

Room Tip: 1018 has an amazing view!!!!

Upon paying a premium to stay in this 'luxury accommodation', we were bitterly disappointed. The acoustics are appalling and we could hear people next door talking, cutlery on plates, washing machine beeps and the stench of cigarettes permeated our room from the suites below. Calls to management to rectify or discuss still remain unanswered and in all our years of travels, this is up there with the worst. No wifi (!) and the make good computers crash and your 30 minute limit expires whilst you're waiting for staff to assist. There are so many better places to stay - steer clear of this one!!

Room Tip: Look elsewhere!

Dear Nic O,

Thank you for your feedback. These concerns are being addressed as a matter of high priority. It is important that all of our guests enjoy a great nights sleep so additional sound installation under doors is being installed as we speak. Regarding the internet, your experience seems to be an isolated instance. We do have a 24 hour IT support service to talk guests through trouble shooting on their individual devices. I really hope the rest of your time in New Zealand was enjoyable and memorable.

Wishing you pleasant travels ahead. Kind regards.

After reading the reviews, I was not going to stay here however I was forced to choose peppers as there was no other affordable option to check in on New Year's Day. I was pleasantly surprised. I was booked into the studio room for 3 nights and had a great stay. Staff are pleasant and accommodating. Don't expect a 5 star hotel experience. My room was clean and everything about my study and experience was good. Great location, you're in the town centre with a 10-15 minute walk.

We booked a special 3-night deal inclusive of breakfast & Peppers Beacon suited us just fine. The room was very spacious, with a lake view (if only we had been able to see the view through the rain!), & an excellent shower. Conveniently situated just a five minute flat walk (many place in Queenstown are on steep hills) from the town. Emma on reception was exceptionally pleasant & helpful & Vijay ran the breakfast room faultlessly. Peppers is a good base for exploring the area.
