“The noisiest rooms in New Zealand”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2006

The location is great and the staff were friendly, but the wooden floorboards are very noisy, and the room I stayed in seemed to have no soundproofing. Every sound outside the door could be heard, including the fax machine at reception down the corridor, and conversations between staff as if they were taking place in the room. This was not a peaceful stay. There is a sign at reception that asks guests to refrain from wearing high heel shoes, ostensibly to avoid damage to the wooden floor, but surely this refers to the noise problem. In addition the air conditioning must be faulty as my room stank of bacon during the morning - the odours from the kitchen seemed to be piped directly into the room! This was one of the worst stays I have ever had.

Dear Readers and Guests
We appreciate feedback that highlights issues that our guests have experienced which impacted their stay. This review was for a stay in 2005 when Coronation Lodge first opened. We have since implemented some changes to our operations to reduce noise.

Our office multifunction fax/printer has been set to silent, so there is no noisy transmitting sound when sending faxes, no alarms for when it is out of paper etc. There is just the noise of the rollers feeding the paper, which is minimal and unavoidable.

When we are cooking breakfast in the morning we are now using an overhead extractor fan to reduce the smell of bacon cooking on the grill wafting down the corridor and into rooms.
We also keep the door leading into reception closed until later in the morning to reduce office and breakfast room noise carrying down the corridor.

We have rugs in the hallways now to absorb some of the noise created by guests and staff walking up and down the halls. As staff we are very aware of the noise we create carrying out our duties and try at all times to keep this to a minimum. We only have two staff on during the very middle of the day to assist with cleaning, otherwise we work alone which enables us to keep the noise we create to a minimum.

Without constructive feedback we are unable to then improve out service and products so feedback which highlights room for improvement is very much appreciated. We believe that 6 years on we have put into place policies, procedures and improvements to help reduce some of the issues guests experienced when the lodge first opened.

Thank you for taking the time to read our response.

Stayed here during the Christmas/New Year's period and - in contrast to all other Queenstown accommodation which was exorbitantly priced at this time - the Coronation Lodge charged a comparatively decent rate. It also is only a 4-5 minute stroll to the city centre, which was great. The decor was very basic but clean, as it appeared to be a fairly new lodge. However, any rooms on the lower level are bound to have excessive noise during the mornings, when people check out or go to the breakfast room at the same level. When I asked whether I could move to another room upstairs, this was flatly rejected, without explanation, even though there WERE rooms available (I guess it was just too much effort for them). This spoilt my experience in Coronation Lodge quite a bit.

My sister and I stayed at the Coronation Lodge for a few days in August and it was a great place to stay. The lodge is just a short walk through the Queenstown Gardens to the central downtown area. The room was great. We had a lot of bed space, and there were bed warmers in all of them (something you would think would be standard in NZ in winter, but really isn't). Plus, there really are few bad views in Queenstown, so the deck was nice. The room was extremely clean, and is relatively new. The only thing that could have been better was the limited guest parking, but that isn't much of a problem because the area has a lot of street parking if you don't get one of the garage spots.

This is a "boutique" hotel, but lacked charm and comfort. The best thing it has going for it is the location, which was great. The room was fairly small, and although it looked good it was impractical. The bathroom in particular was a problem. The shower nozzle was unable to be adjusted or directed, and there was no bench space on which to place toiletries etc. The hotel floors were all wood, and although the bathroom floor was heated the rest of the room was rather cold. There was little warmth and cosiness about this room. Although it wasn't a terrible experience, we couldn't think of any reason to stay here again if we return to Queenstown.
