“Wonderful location, views and very clean apartments!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2009

We stayed at Villa Del Lago for one week and would recommend it to our family/friends. The apartment was larger than we expected and very clean. There are wonderful views of the lake with the 2 double glass sliding doors in the living area. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything we needed. Living area has fireplace that produces good heat as the nights got chilly. Nice flat screen T.V. and comfy throw blanket. Heated towel racks in the bathroom was a plus. Each day they exchange bath towels and dish towels. Washer/dryer worked great and they had laundry detergent on site. Nice soft sheets. Only thing they could improve would be softer beds. Beautiful walk ( 20 minutes ) into town. If you prefer taking the local bus, it's only $3 (NZ) and they pick you up on site. Be sure to book all your adventures ( jet boating, Milford Sound, wine tours etc. ) through Villa Del Lago. Same cost and you don't have to stand in line at the "I-sites" ( visitor centers). Also, on most adventures, the coach company will pick you up on site! Claire and her team are so friendly and willing to assist with anything. The location is fantastic if you want a more quiet area with beautiful views. Steep steps down to walking trail. Lower apartments are closer to the trail but still have lake view ( trees, bushes hide some of the view ). Higher apartments have the best view but closer to the street. Each room has own patio with table/2 chairs. Overall, we were very happy with Villa Del Lago and will stay again on our next visit.

We stayed in an apartment in Villa del Lago for almost 3 weeks in November 2008. We had stayed for a few nights 2 years previously and found it excellent. Our memory of the place was correct and it lived up to the good memories we had of it. There is a great view over lake Wakatipu and there is easy access from the apartment complex to the lakeside walk into town.
The facilities are first rate. Clare is the manager and is most pleasant and helpful and John, her husband went to a lot of trouble to assist us with a difficulty we had with lost keys to our bags.
All in all, we had a great stay and expect to return.

My family (wife and 2 children) spent 5 nights here in Feb. Like everyone else on this forum, I agree that this is a special place. Clare and John do their best to ensure you are comfortable and feel at home. The units are clean, spacious and offer spectacular views of The Remarkables. We were able to make breakfast in the unit in addition to a few other meals as well. Overall, very nice and a solid 5 star serviced apartment..

We booked a 2 bedroom apartment, but ended up with a 3 bedroom at no additional cost. The views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables are outstanding and we utilized the path to go into town on several occasions. Our apartment included a washer, dryer, dishwasher and full kitchen which we fully utilized. The bathrooms also had heated floors which was awesome since it was rainy and a little cold for part of our 4 day stay. So it was nice to get out of the shower to a warm floor.

Maybe the value perception for us was high - given we got an amazing deal to stay for 3 days during Dec'08.

Ignoring that - the place is a discovery.
1. Just the right distance from the town center to have a good 1 km stroll besides the lake walk.
2. The balcony opening right above the lake offering a marvelous view of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables. - The view is the same from the bedroom and the kitchen since the villa has French windows at the entrance
3. A wonderful host, Claire
4. Good facilities - kitchenette, laundry, heater, et al ..

Recommended definitely ... both Queenstown as a place and Villa Del lago

My husband and I just returned from a 7 night stay at Villa Del Lago and really enjoyed it. We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment (#9) and had a wonderful view of the Remarkables mountain range. The apartment was VERY clean and bright and the managers (Clare and her husband John) couldn't have been nicer. One entire wall of the apartment is glass, so you'll want to pull the curtains closed at night for privacy, but the view is incredible. I wouldn't classify Villa Del Lago as a 5 -star accommodation (I reserve that for the Ritz), but it certainly would rate 4-stars. Daily cleaning is included and we had the local paper delivered every morning. The kitchen had everything you'd need if you decided to cook one evening (we did). All in all, it was a great location and very nice apartment for 2 people (it might be a bit tight for more, but the sofa did open up to a bed if more people stay overnight).

My husband and I went to Villa Del Lago with the intention of staying only 4 nights. We ended up staying 6 nights! We stayed in apartment #8, a one-bedroom apartment. It had a gorgeous view of the lake and mountains (see pictures). It is a very clean apartment with a fireplace, fully-stocked kitchen, washer & dryer (which was great for the extended stay), heated bathroom floors, heated towel rack, and comfortable bed. The lodge is actually located on the side of the mountain so you have to go down steep steps to get to your apartment. The beauty of the scenery makes it worth the extra steps though.

You can access a path into town, going down the hill towards the lake, and walking beside the lake, if you are up to a 20-minute walk into town. On a nice day, it is a good way to get familiar with Queenstown, but you need to be somewhat fit for the walk. I recommend you drive closer in to town to eat meals. If you are new to Queenstown, like we were, we found it easy to drive to the park, and park along the street. That way, you can access restaurants located by the lake in downtown Queenstown and avoid the traffic directly in town. We were traveling the South Island for two weeks so we actually enjoyed cooking our breakfast in the apartment. The grocery store we used was in a nice shopping area located close to the Queenstown airport.

You can pay extra for an internet connection, through a wireless network called SurfSpot. I paid $20 for 120 minutes of internet usage. You can purchase 30 & 60 minutes at another rate. SurfSpot is also available at the Queenstown airport if you have leftover minutes.

Claire and her husband are excellent lodge managers. They went out of their way to assure we had everything we needed. They helped us with arranging tours and giving directions. They even allowed us to check out late since our plane did not leave until 3 in the afternoon. Claire suggested it without me having to ask. That shows how in-tune they are with their guests. The young lady that cleans the apartment each day is also very pleasant and conscientious. Overall, our stay was very nice at this location.
