We rang the morning we wanted to go and made it for a 1.30 tour. Perfect for us as we were driving from Wanaka. We were met at the depot in Queenstown by Dion our tour guide in army like 4WD. There was just us and a grandad and his grandson on this trip.
The trip to Skippers Canyon was not what I expected. It's off road and so scary. My husband and adult children loved the very long journey over icy cliff edges and mushy terrain, enjoying the very tight turns that curled my toes wondering if we would slide off the edge into deep ravines. The journey goes up a very steep narrow one way mountain and not for people like me who dislike heights. Everyone else "oohed" and "Ahhed" the scenery hanging through windows whilst I closed my eyes. Dion minus a microphone and recovering from a flu is jovial and has you captivated by the history of this very serene place. We pass by icicles and snow capped trees, one would think you were in Canada in Christmas time... finally we reach the Shotover river.
We are given wet weather gear and a safety vest and then it starts with 360 spin. This was an exhilarating experience, the cold against your face, the skimming at full throttle over shallow water and the nearness of the mountains face as we zoomed by. This was a wonderful memory, such a beautiful place. Then it was a visit to the original Bungee Jump bridge, time to have tomato soup, have a break and take it all in. We arrived back at Queenstown at 5.30pm. This was excellent value for money. Dion was a fantastic guide! Highly recommend for all ages.
