“Lovely way to spend an afternoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

My friend and I went to Gibbston without knowing what to expect except we'd heard they have good wine. It is a beautiful winery! Its more of what I expected from a winery than all the others we visited while in NZ. This is due to a comparison from Napa/Sonoma. They have a very nice Cheesery where we got a delicious sandwich for lunch, which we shared. They also had a great assortment of other goodies for cooking and eating. I purchased a couple of things they had out as samples. Their cheese was amazing too!
We had Aaron as our tour guide but since we were the only 2 on the tour we had his undivided attention. He was very knowledgeable about the winery and wine in general. While the tour was $15 we had an opportunity to try 3 wines. The "cave" isn't nearly what some are in other parts of the world are but there is no other place that smells like a wine cave. If you've been in one you know what I mean! It was interesting to see but is a bit steep in cost.
We were going to lunch in the restaurant but we were too late after we went shopping in their gift shop. This was the BEST gift shop we saw at any winery the entire trip. Unfortunately it was early on our trip so we didn't buy some things we thought we'd see later. Lesson learned. Even in the Marlborough region, none of the 7 wineries we went to had gift shops. The restaurant area for outdoor eating was just beautiful. Even eating in front of the cheesery where they had several cafe and picnic tables was lovely.
The wine itself was very nice. They have several pinot's some of which are much better than the other. We did find their wine less expensive elsewhere so keep that in mind.
This is a very nice winery and a great way to wile away the day.

“Awesome location; but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

Wine tour ($15 pp) had all the potential of being interesting and fun, but Aaron (he could have been having an 'off' day) was disinterested and couldn't get rid of the tour group fast enough.
As a kiwi who has been to wineries in NZ, Australia, and America... I was disappointed because the potential was there to be a great showcase for NZ wines - an awesome location and great wines, but the execution of this tour was poor.
Do go to the cheese shop next door... The tasting was awesome!

“Great setting and good wines”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

Our group came to the winery for an afternoon snack/antipasta plate - delicious! Then we enjoyed a walk in the vineyard and tasting in the cellar. The wait staff were good and fun. I'd definitely return.

“More than just wine tasting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

We did the wine tour and tasting in the cave, very interesting and informative. There is also a cheesery and gift shop. We arrived too late to try the restuarant, but would make a good stop off for lunch and a sampling of one of the excellent wines.

“A must do”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

Duty Manager Simon spent a great deal of time with us and explained every thing in details. Helped in picking up Moscato, which my wife really liked it. Pinot noirI tasting was also very good.

It is a small winery and produce small quantities of Moscato, so you may have to pay a bit more but you would love the experience. There is small charge of NZD 5 which is waived off if you buy a bottle of wine.
