“Must-do visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2015 NEW

A last minute decision to visit this winery was the best decision of the day! The drive along the road is very exciting and as rugged as the surrounding scenery. The Duty Manager that day - Pauline - was knowledgeable, accommodating and extremely entertaining. We left feeling like we'd made a friend. Definitely worth a visit while in Queenstown/Arrowtown. We shall return!

“The driven in is worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2015

The winery is 2 to 3 Kms along a narrow windy gravel road. Not for the faint hearted but if you stick to the LHS and drive slowly around the bends there is nothing to fear. There are some great photo opportunities as well up the gorgy river but also down at the AJ Hacket Bungy Bridge below. There are some nice Chard Farm wines to taste. NB: although made on site also, you can't taste the Rabbit Ranch wines as they are a separate business.

“Wines are good, views are great. Good package”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2015

The adventure starts just getting into Chard Farm up the narrow road that rises well above the Kawarau Gorge. This was the original road into the area, but was abandoned in favour of the now disused bridge opposite the winery (The Bungy Bridge) in 1880. The drive is worth it because this is a winery of eminence, producing marvellous wines that can actually be sent to Australia freight free as long as they are in dozens. The winery has a commanding position above the gorge with vines splayed out all around it. There are interesting sculptures, and lovely gardens, in front of the impressive main building. The information on wines able to be imparted here is impressive. I recommend this winery to you.

“Tuscany in Otago”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2015

We were warned about the drive in and they were right...just drive slowly and don't look at the Bungee jumpers below in the gorge.
This winery has fabulous wines at a fabulous price in the most fabulous looking setting.
There is a charge (tip) for tasting which is a great idea as you don't feel stingy walking out without a dozen under your arms.
A definite must do!

“Well worth the drive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2015

We weren't sure if we were going to make it based on the narrow drive to the winery but we did and it was well worth it. We were greeted in the cellar door by Pauline who took us through their whites and their range of Pinot Noir (the reason that we stopped in). Upon realizing that we had come to Queenstown to get married, Pauline made a 2010 Mata-Au Pinot Noir available to us for purchase, which we did. We enjoyed it on the evening of our wedding a couple days later. We also purchased a magnum of one of their single vineyard Pinot Noirs to celebrate sometime in the future. The cellar door was the nicest we visited and the 2010 Mata-Au was divine. Thanks so much!
