“Very pleased with our stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2008

We were very pleased with the St. Moritz hotel - great location and
excellent staff. We loved the view of the lake and we easily could walk to shopping, restaurants, etc. The staff was very attentive and available. They nicely accommodated all of our needs – changing rooms, showing us to operate the washer/dryer and changing the dates of our excursions due to rainy weather.

We did the Milford Sound excursion with Real Journeys and took the fly back option – it was beautiful. We did a ½ day wine tour with Appleton Tours and that was a great experience. We also enjoyed the Gondola and dinner show.

  • Liked — The lake views and a washer/dryer in the room
  • Disliked — Avoid rooms above the bar due to smokers on the bar patio.

Very mixed feelings.

The whole area is in a bit of a financial crisis slump, and it probably effects the atmosphere at the hotel.

The positives, good location close to the main pier, A bit of a hill but not as bad as previous reviewers may have indicated. The bed was comfy and we booked a deluxe room which was large.

The negatives: The deluxe room was on the top floor above the main door. The lift however went to the floor below and a flight of stairs up.

Paying for parking when there was no valet service at the time of arrival was a bit odd. But an extra money making venture.

The noise was incredibly bad. Being under the roof over the parking and level with the road made for constant irritating noise. The people checking in bounced off the roof and the people on the room was level with the window and noice came straight in. Double glazing would have helped. A lakeside view may be shielded from the noise but was a lot more expensive.

The other thing that annoyed me was that we paid for a rate that supposedly included a $65 lunch hamper. On checking out they tried to charge us for the hamper, but were only going to charge $35. Seems like a case of false advertising on the value of the package. I would have thought the hamper was really only $35 value so I guess I feel like were were overcharged $30 on the package.

We have a loyalty/discount card for this chain and stay extensively at hotels of the chain in asia. So we can comment on the comparative value of the meal in the restaurant. It was actually quite good and of a reasonable value. The view from the restaurant was good.

Wife and I stayed here for a week while in Queenstown, payed the "guaranteed lowest internet rate."

Positives:

-Decor: very modern, and hip, but comfortable and cozy-lobby fireplace, fur chairs, soft lighting and colors.

-Restauant: great food, resonably priced, excellent view of the lake and mountains. excellent breakfast. Great bar, with funny bartender who loves to improvize and try new drinks...

-Rooms: warm, extremely comfortable beds, nice TV's, recycling containers w/ trash, modern baths.

-Amenities: cool gym; coin laundry very convenient; lobby full of old National Geographic mags (unique touch)

-BEST OF ALL: awesome staff: so, so helpful in making reservations for activities, helping pick things to do (and avoid). Really, some of the best Ive ever met while traveling.

Negatives:

-None, really.

Watch for: hotel is on a hill, its a steep walk back to the hotel from downtown, but you get used to it after 1-2 days. Some people may have a hard time, though.

Mixed thoughts on this one.
Make sure you read other reviews for this hotel, as our experience was average at best due to the room location.

The good.
Location is good.
Short walk (5 minutes) to town. Keep in mind there is a steep hill.
Spacious and clean, with a bath.
Friendly reception staff.

The Bad.
Noise.
Our room and i gather the entire hotel, did not have double glazed windows and thus let though traffic noise.
The noise on our second night really put a massive negative spin to our stay.
We were located just above the ramp down to the car park.
The hotel is located on a hill and you could hear from time to time small trucks / diesel vehicles struggling up the hill.
During the day we weren't there, however when dozing off to sleep i was unlucky enough to hear a truck and then someone up stairs flushing the toilet every 5 minutes.

There is a large TV let down by poor signal. Looked rubbish and there were few channels.

Heat controls seem to be for decoration.

I would have liked to have been positive and perhaps the front lake rooms don't have this problem.

I normally fall asleep in seconds, however the second night noise from upstairs and traffic made a good experience impossible and my thoughts were that of sleeping in the car. However it would have been just as bad.

I mentioned the experience to reception and booked out in the early morning. Reception didn't seem surprised?

  • Liked — Spacious and nice bed.
  • Disliked — Noise, poor tv reception, cold bathroom.

We stayed in a one bedroom lakefront room.

The room is perfect.

We love the spacious living area, the seperate bedroom and the large bathroom.

The hotel has had a soft refurbishment since we were last here and the decor is very fresh and modern.

The linen and towels are good quality and the room was always well cleaned.

We had buffet breakfast in the restaurant and the food is very good, even for buffet breakfast! We did not have time to have dinner this stay but in the past have had some wonderful meals at this restaurant.

The staff were a credit to the hotel and were helpful, friendly and polite at all times.

We had a wonderful stay.

Spent five nights at the St Moritz Queenstown over winter/spring for skiing.
We were initially sceptical about staying here due to bad reviews on this site, but found the St Moritz to be nothing but first class in all areas during our stay.
Everything - from the well appointed rooms to the consistently good food to the customer service focus of all the staff - made this one of the best hotel experiences we had whilst in New Zealand.
Had an apartment style room, incredibly spacious, clean, modern and well decorated. Good views over roof tops to the lake beyond.
Beautiful restauarant bar and reception area, very welcoming.
All the little touches and attention to detail, such as ski reports, papers from around the world, etc, set the St Mouritz apart.
Location was great, at the nicer end of Queenstown, walking distance from the centre of town.
All in all, fantastic time, would not hesitate in recommending and would love to go back!

  • Liked — Warm and inviting decor, great customer service, hot tub, wood fired pizzas from restuarant
  • Disliked — Combined washer and dryer took forever to dry
