“Would have been amazing in it’s former life, now a little tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

If you want/need to be close to Queenstown, don't stay here. If aprox 8 minutes by car is OK, read on.
I stayed with my wife for a 'weekend away'. First impressions were pretty good. Quite 'grand', with some amazing artwork and beautiful gardens. Pretty reasonably priced (it has to be because of the distance from Queenstown). However after a walk round and game of tennis, it was pretty apparent the whole place really needs a bit of an overhaul - pretty near end to end.
Pros: Big well appointed rooms, quite homely. Tremendous views down to the Shotover river. Friendly, helpful staff. Pretty quiet rooms. Tennis, squash, gym etc. included in room rate.
Con's: Need's s fair amount of money spent on it. Needs an upgrade to the hot water system because if you shower after 9am (when busy) your shower will be cold (I know!! hard to believe these days).

Room Tip: Worth a stay if your OK with my comments. If you stay in the Garden View rooms, get top floor, as lo...

We'd never visited Queenstown before and it wasn't really our kind of place (in fact we deliberately thought of things to do outside the main township) so it was nice that the hotel we'd booked was at Distinction Point, a little way out of town. Not so good if you don't have a car - we saw a couple of fellow guests trying to walk to Queenstown in hideous weather and it is just not nice! So best to stay in town if you want to be able to walk to the shops/attractions etc.

We were welcomed thoroughly and in a friendly and efficient manner.

I should mention we stayed at this hotel only because we got a really good online deal - we would not have paid full price as it is not the kind of price range we go for in accommodation.

Our deal included one night's dinner at the restaurant. The food was okay. I got Southland Venison which should have been served rare but it was well done which was a little disappointing. My husband was relatively unimpressed with his salmon main. The desserts were nice. I would have mentioned to the staff about the venison had I been able to get a word in edgeways (the same man who welcomed us at the front desk was helping out in the restaurant and he was very loud and talkative).

Also breakfast was included and this was quite nice.

The cleaning was a little annoying - used wine glasses were rinsed and left upside down to dry on the cabinet. Why not give us new glasses please? Used coffee cup was not cleaned, emptied or replaced. Bed making was a little messy.

I'm not sure if I would give this as high a rating if we had paid full price.

This was our first trip to Queenstown and we thought that we should try to be different and stay outside the hustle and bustle of the lake and town centre. On paper this hotel looked pretty good, was in a great location just out of town and just seemed very interesting, and it was.
You get the feeling this hotel tries really hard to be a bit different and to project a sense of luxury. Everything had a golden tint to it, but other than that the art, furniture and other drips and drabs were just a little inconsistent. The same is true in the room, there was a lot of fake luxury, and honestly I didn't mind. It felt a little luxuries and sometimes was just a good laugh.

The room itself was pretty clean and very spacious. We didn't get a river view room, but if you can afford it I would recommend it. The view towards the shotover river is just spectacular. Of course you can always wander around the hotel and look at the view from the lounge and bar areas.

The only thing "broken" in our room was that the shower door didn't close properly. We phoned in the problem, but it was never fixed over the 3 days of our stay. The biggest issue with this hotel was, again, inconsistency. For a hotel that tries to be luxuries there was the following issues:
1. We had a twin room, but beds were singles (for a hotel like this, they show really be dual doubles).
2. Old school CRT TV. LCDs are dirty cheap these days.....
3. A large pot with no (or dead) plant in it on the Veranda (why?) along with a few cob webs here and there.
3. Weird sets of tiny tea cups that just don’t fit with the rest of the room.
4. Low quality toiletries (including shoe shine).

The things above are not deal breakers at all, but are just little things that should have been done properly for it to be a truly high class hotel.

There was a great looking pool and spa that no guests used. I didn't even know if it costs more money to use or was free. Oh yeah, there is a tennis court for use, but it has also been a bit neglected.

One major issue we had during our stay was that the hot water facility was broken, we never got proper showers the entire time. I mentioned this issue so late in this review because I don't expect this to be a continuing problem. However we did talk to the manager after complaining many times over the phone (similar to other guests) and was offered half of the cost of my stay back, which I accepted (full refund would be a more generous offer but I didn't want to push further). We were offered the use of the spa showers (which ran on gas. By the way, lovely looking spa facility, but again under-utilised).

We didn't try the restaurant so can't really comment, but it never looked busy during any service. Being where it is, I can't see many guests other than from those staying at the hotel itself.

Ultimately, with the hot water fixed and if you get a good deal, there is nothing wrong with trying this place out for a romantic trip. But there are just so many little things that they didn't get right which would have made this place great. That is what really pains me about this place.

Room Tip: If you can afford to pay a bit more, I would definitely recommend the river view room. Otherwise the...

My "old shelia" was about to turn 70 so I hunted around for a quality destination to mark the occasion. After many deliberations I settled on this spot in the back of Queenstown, NZ. It was a great choice with wonderful facilities and great meals. The management and staff do their utmost to provide every assistance. Just 7 km from Queenstown but in a different world. Choose a "river view" room and sit on the balcony and watch the antics of the jet boats a hundred meters below on the Shotover River.
Note: If you are arriving by car and rely on a GPS enter the address as 146 Arthurs Point Road, ARTHURS POINT. If you enter city as "Queenstown" you won't find the hotel.

Our 2nt deal came with breakfasts, dinner for 2 for 1 nt, free use of spa area and mini cinema, late check out etc. It was terrific!

The staff from the manager Andrew down were all extremely friendly and welcoming, most unlike a number of Queenstown hotels. Jen at reception was delightful and the chef is superb.

Our room was vast, had electric blankets, comfortable couches, easy access to our car and everything we could wish for, importantly it was really clean.

Views from the spa and pool over the Lower Shotover river were great too. After our splendid 3 course dinner we curled up in 1 of 5 couches in the mini cinema with a good dvd.

Set on the edge of Queenstown we found the Arthurs Point location excellent with a lovely drive to Arrowtown or back to Queenstown in a quieter location.

If we are really lucky Grabone will offer this again!

We stayed 3 nights in the Presidential Suite and had a blast. Great view overlooking the Shotover River with our own private outdoor spa bath. Staff are professional and assisted us with our requests. Breakfast was scrumptious and the facilities was what we needed. The massage was totally relaxing! Highly recommended.
A memorable place for us and we shall be back!

We booked 3 nights as it meant an upgrade to the River View which was fantastic. However if we had been aware of the 2 night special would probably have used that.

The staff were exceptionally helpfull and accommodating and went to great efforts to help make a birthday celebration extra special for our companion.

The evening restaurant has incredible views and the meals superb, couldnt fault anything.

There is also a light menu but this was not offered until the second night.

We enjoyed the movie theatre experience but the pool was only available before 1000 and after 1800 unless you booked into the spa which was disappointing.

The hotel is in need of maintenance especially the exterior. Details like dirty windows, floors not cleaned or vacuumed and several other minor but noticeable things should not be an issue in a Boutique hotel advertised as luxury.
