“Another typical city hotel room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2011

In a big city like Queenstown, choosing a hotel can be tricky. After reading all the reviews, we've booked a room for NZ$120 + underground parking NZ$10. It says in the description that the location is CBD but it's actually some distance away.
The room is a typical big hotel chain room. No internet and no kitchen. See my pictures for the room.
If we have a chance to go again we would definitely choose a motel even though it might be a bit farther from downtown.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing courtyard to avoid traffic noise

Finally getting round to reviewing the hotel having stayed here in October 2009 as part of my honeymoon - 4 days in Hong Kong and 18 days in New Zealand. Check in was fairly painless, considering that I had just been on a 12/13 hour slog through the time zones from Hong Kong. Room was spacious and comfortable with a lovely view of Lake Wakatipu. There is a free minibus to and from the centre of Queenstown which we made full use of, but the centre is only a short walk from the hotel.

I have noticed a few complaints from previous reviewers regarding the early check-out times. This wasn't a problem for us in particular as our bus to Christchurch departed at 0730.

Overall, it was a great 4 days in Queenstown.

Room Tip: Get a lake view room!

We arrived in Queenstown having made the long drive from Christchurch and were met by the unhelpful reception staff, where we disappointed to find that we would be charged to park the car for the duration of our stay (10NZD per night). This together with a near collision with the hotel mini bus that nearly reversed into us was not a good start. Following check in to what we were led to believe was a superior room we found the room to be a standard twin. We returned to reception and again, the distant staff sorted out our room, but it seemed to be an inconvenience to deal with us as guests. Whilst a comfortable stay, the décor is somewhat dated and the facilities unreliable. On the morning of our departure, the boiler had broken down so only some of the quests were receiving hot water. Yet again, when raising this to the staff, they were extremely unhelpful and unsympathetic. Whilst an unavoidable problem, the way that the staff dealt with our complaint left much to be desired. To top it off, when settling the bill for the car park, they have the nerve to charge you should you wish to use a credit card. This is a chain of hotels we will not use again.

John C, General Manager at Millennium - Queenstown, responded to this review, October 11, 2011
Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay with us. I was disappointed to read that our frontline staff seemed unsympathetic to your needs. As a result of your comments, I have instructed my new Front Office Manager to address this issue with the individuals concerned. My apologies also for the failure of our water boilers. It transpired that the fault was electrical in nature, and due to a local power failure that occurred in the early hours of the morning. We got a local electrical company in to fix the problem as soon as we could - however, again, how this is communicated to guests is of vital importance, and we again fell short of your expectation in this regard. Please be assured that I will personally monitor the performance of our Front Desk and Portering team to ensure that we make improvements in our service delivery, and my thanks again for your comments.

We stayed at Millennium for 3 nights, and it was generally a comfortable stay. The hotel felt like a generic hotel you might find anywhere (long corridors with rooms branching off), but was nonetheless clean and cozy. Our room faces out to the main road (i.e. not into the courtyard), but it was not very noisy. There was a cherry tree in full bloom with a mountain in the background so that was where I think I got my most beautiful photo. :-)

The room service was prompt enough and the pizza we ordered was surprisingly not too bad.
In general, the service was good although it was marred by one incident. The first night we arrived quite late and the concierge was already closed. We had planned to be out early the second day to go Milford Sound and will only return late. There was a tour we wanted to go on the third day that I had not booked, so I left instructions with the reception to help us make bookings. When we returned from Milford Sound on the second evening, the concierge met me and that was when I found out that the booking had not been made. Apparently there was some miscommunication between the reception and the concierge, who thought I merely wanted to find out more about the tour. Naturally, the tour office had already closed by then and the tour would start early the next morning. We were left anxious with unconfirmed plans that night, but kudos to the concierge who managed to scramble early the next day to confirm the booking.

Other than that, the hotel is at that awkward distance from the city centre where it is a bit too near to drive, and a bit too far to walk. (We tried both.)

Note that parking at the hotel is $10 per night. In retrospect, that might not be necessarily as we usually saw ample street parking.

We stayed at the Millennium Queenstown, for a few days during Springtime, on an wedding anniversary getaway. We had a nice quiet hotel room which opened out onto the hotel's internal courtyard, where trees were in full blossom. Very pretty, and gave some privacy from other rooms that surround the courtyard also. Room was nice and clean and well presented. The bed was really comfy and the shower was good also. Only a short walk to the town centre and the bus stops right outside the door if required. Overall we enjoyed our stay, and would be more than happy to stay again.
