“Noisy neighbors”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

I generally try not to rate a hotel on the noisy neighbors...however:) We had some very noisy neighbors who weren't english speaking which kind of made it even more obnoxious. There was a tour bus staying at the hotel and our room was smack-dab in the middle of all their rooms. We were the odd room out of an giant group of Asians. I don't mean that inappropriately, only that this group happen to be loud which in a hotel I think is inconsiderate.
Perks of this hotel is the location. Beautiful views, we drove in during the night and had no idea what breathtaking views surrounded us until the morning. Also it is a 5 minute walk to downtown. We were able to use our credit card reward points to stay here. There is a restaurant and bar inside, but we did not eat there. Staff friendly, no other complaints besides the noise level which is not really to the fault of the hotel.

I have a great lakeview from my room. I like the modern facilities in the hotel room and also the prompt services from the staff. The room temperature is just right too and the beds are very comfortable. I would love to stay in this hotel again in the future.

Room Tip: My room was located on the 2nd floor, Room number starting with 12xx. It has a patio. Although the...

well, we did manage to get a nice lake view room, i'll give you that. but seriously, hotel management really need to re-train their staff. their attitudes are horrible, no smile no greetings at all. it's rude to ignore a person normally, moreover when you are in a hospitality line, this is unprofessional.
regardless of their poor customer service, location of the hotel is quite good, town centre is within walkable distance from the hotel. still, there are room for improvement.

I stayed at Copthorne for five nights in October 2013. My visit coincided with the centenary celebrations for the Earnslaw steamer on Lake Wakatipu (that is a "must do" attraction in itself).

My impressions of Copthorne are similar to other reviewers.

The breakfast was good; pretty well the standard buffet that was quite busy at times. The staff were excellent. You are welcomes, directed to a table and then served your first hot drink; after that it's up to you.

The room was fine but a little stuffy at times. It reminded me of other places in cooler climates, particularly in the USA. I thought the decor was a little dated (very 1980s?) but the manager mentioned it had been redecorated within the past five years.

On one day the soap had not been replaced in the bathroom; I considered that lack of attention to detail but I must say it was supplied within a few minutes of me advising reception.

My main issue was with wifi; Copthorne offer free wifi but only for 20 minutes per day and then only in the reception area. I availed myself of the facility just once; the friendly receptionist warned me that the connection was likely to drop out within the 20 minutes and that's what happened. When I took it up with the manager, he said it was an problem but that it should be fixed with the current installation of the high speed broadband network to the Queenstown area.

The $4 fee for using a credit card, mentioned by another contributor, is the practice at Copthorne and it is an unnecessary annoyance at the end of what is otherwise a pleasant stay. Surely the $4 could be included in the tariff. The manager explained to me that it was both Copthorne corporate policy and industry practice generally to impose a fee for people (surely the vast majority?) to choose to settle their account by credit card.

Copthorne is conveniently located but the walk to the main area is rather steep despite the stunning views. There is a town bus stop close to Copthorne but seemed to be rarely used. The Queenstown buses pass every 15 minutes.

A pleasant place to stay in a delightful part of the world.

Room Tip: Lakeview rooms cost extra but are probably worth the expense. However, the interior rooms are good...

We were greeted by friendly and efficient staff at reception. We were soon sorted out and given our room key. Our room was on an upper floor. It was reasonably sized and very pleasant with a large balcony over looking a very steep street with views of the slightly snow capped mountains and part of the huge lake. The TV in the room was surprisingly a old fashioned tube TV not a modern flat screen. The weather also affected the TV reception as one of our four nights several channels just jumped constantly as the picture would not stay still.

One night we had the two course set meal in the dinning room which was excellent value at $32. I had Rib eye steak with peppercorn sauce and onion tart as the main and a sweet of rice pudding, fruit compote, ice cream and various chocolate decorations. My steak was undercooked a little but not enough to complain about. We also had a bar meal which was as good if not better value and just as well presented and tasty as the normal dining room food.

Breakfast was the usual buffet of cereal, juice etc. plus a full hot buffet along with a variety of bread, pastries and croissants. The waiting staff brought you your first cup of tea or coffee and after that it was fill your cup yourself which is no great hardship. The waiting staff were very friendly.

We had a small problem with the bathroom toilet whilst we were there but a phone call to reception soon sorted this out less than 2 minutes after I phoned. Very efficient service.

On check out there was the $4 surcharge for using a credit card BUT at least this time there was a notice clearly stating the fact, unlike at a previous Copthorne where we were just told of the charge.

A good place to stay close to the centre but down a very steep walkway and so a steep walk back up the hill but one could always take a taxi if the hill was too much. Queenstown is a place of steep hills so this should not be too much of a surprise.

Thank you for your comments, I will look into the snowy picture and we are in the process of changing over the last of the crt televisions to flat screens. I will pass on your comments about the staff and the food. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

Queenstown is a fabulous place to visit any time of the year. This hotel is a short distance to the city centre but there is an incline involved. Be careful when booking as they have a sister property called the Copthorne Hotel and Apartments which is a little further away.

Room Tip: Book a lake view room. It's worth the extra.

Stayed at the Copthorne for 2 nights. It's centrally located (it's literally 5 minutes gently walk from the middle of Queenstown) and has all the amenities. Including an undercover car park ( $10 per day) but necessary as on street parking was at a premium. The main building has obviously been designed to enjoy the views across the lake to the Remarkable Mountains, I had a lakeview room, with it's own little balcony on level 6 ( the lobby is on level 5), with a fantastic view. The restaurant is on the same level and shares the view. The bedroom was of a good size, and the bathroom was reasonable. High speed broadband is available - for a price. The TV was good - once I found out that the antenna cable was unplugged and fixed that problem. The was a similar problem with the plug in the bathroom, it comes with a test circuit which had been tripped and needed to be reset. Breakfast was included in my room rate and was of a good standard. The front desk staff were very easy to get on with. I ate in on 2 occasions. On one of these there was a chefs special which proved excellent for both quality and price. The second meal was a la carte and was reasonably priced. The bar prices were about $9 per glass of wine or beer.

Room Tip: Lake View and 6th floor are the things to look for.
