First time I have done this activity and I have to say I will definitely do it again!
Frogz is in the middle of Queenstown and Wanaka, so you can do this trip from either Queenstown or Wanaka. I was picked up in Wanaka by the guide and being the only passenger departing from Wanaka (the others came from Queenstown), I had my own "private taxi", as the others in my group termed it.
We were given a safety brieifing before gearing up and heading into the water, where we practiced moving around in a sledge like sideways movement, flipping upside down and getting back on the sledge, proper way to use the sledge, getting in and out of eddies, etc. This practice also allowed the guides to check our water confidence and to pay attention to those who were more afraid of the water. There were 6 of us in total and 2 guides, meaning 1 guide:3 frogz(us). For those who were really afraid of the water had the option of not going into the water, or having a guide hold on to your sledge.
After getting out into the main river stream and kicking towards the waterfall, my energy was totally depleted. We stopped at an eddy where the guides checked if everyone was alright and to confirm if we did indeed want to continue on the run down the river. I wanted to rest for 5 minutes, but was rejected by the guides, who gave me the option of continuning on the run, or to stop the sledging. When I commented to the guide that I was tired, I was surprised when the guide replied that "we have not even started." True enough, though the rapids were exhilarating, the next few rapids required all of my energy. I had always thought I was pretty fit, but I only realised how weak I was after meeting these rapids.
At all times the guides were looking after us, sometimes holding on to our sledges and at others pushing us in the right direction. I have no idea how the guides do this everyday and sometimes even twice a day!
We were given an optional second run down the river (only if you wanted to!), which was easier considering we knew what to expect. I have to say, it was just as exhausting!
If you are confident in water and physically fit and looking for a bit of thrill, you should definitely try this! Confidence in water is really important for this activity as the rapids do get pretty overwhelming if you are not. Still, there was a lady in my group who was not too confident and whose sledge the guide was holding on to throughout feedback that she felt safe at all times and enjoyed herself thoroughly.
The only reason why I gave this 4 out of 5 stars is the pricey photos, which seems to be a norm for most activities in Queenstown. However, I didn't like the fact that the price the photographer quoted me for the photos and videos was different as compared to the one the shop quoted me when I went in to view the photos and videos. In addition, the shop staff did not seem certain of the prices of the photos, which was rather weird to me. Overall, fantastic experience with really amazing guides, had it not been for the photos.
