“A little taste of Sushi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

The place is pretty small so there's no eating inside and you take-away your food. Most of the sushi is under $2 per piece and it is quite good (went there twice). For every three pieces of sushi that you buy, you can get a free cup of miso soup so it's not a bad deal at all. Good place to get a sampling of the local sushi.

“Traditional Japanese in downtown Queenstown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

Japanese restaurants come in all varieties, shapes, and sizes, at least that is the case in the United States, so I consider it relatively rare when I find a restuarant anywhere that is very much like those I encounted in Japan. Hikari, however, is that sort of find, a very traditional Japanese restaurant.

We stopped there for lunch by pure chance, no recommendations, no knowledge of TripAdvisor ratings; we just strolled past the small store front in the center of Queenstown, saw the menu, and decided to stop in.

Others have commented that the service at Hikari was inadequate, but that was not the case for us; however, we did arrive just as they opened for lunch so there were not many customers who needed attention. By the time we finished, the place was comfortably full.

The food was excellent. We ordered lunch plates featuring a variety of dishes in small portions: some rolls, sashimi, tempura, a main dish, all served in traditional Japanese sectional trays. Prices were reasonable and our overall experience was most pleasant.

There are a host of places to eat in downtown Queenstown to say the least, many very good places. If you have a bit of a yearning for Japanese food, we recommend Hikari.

“Tiniest portions in the world and appalling service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

Overall definitely the worst Japanese restaurant I ever had the (mis)fortune to dine in. While the food quality appears to be mediocre (which is good for New Zealand standards), the service was appalling, the price was ridiculous and the portion was miniature to say the least. We sat at the table for about 1 hr and about 55 minutes of that hour the guy behind the counter spent playing with his touchscreen phone, ignoring everything around him except for about 5 minutes when a group of hot japanese girls walked in. I ordered a beef teriyaki which cost a fortune, but was presented on a big plate with a tiny scoop of rice and about 4 pieces of meat. I'm a slim person who doesn't eat all that much, but I wonder how many portions like these would actually fill me up!? Four, five? Worse than disgraceful. No atmosphere, just a bunch of people who want to get as much money as quickly as possible for as little service as possible. Unfortunately most places in New Zealand are like this, so if it's food you're after, don't bother coming down here.

“Characteristic wallpaper, quality food.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

Very efficient service. Excellent food both in presentation and the food. Large servings. Wicker seats weren't the most comfortable but we were served quickly so it didn't matter.

“Good food, not so good service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

Food was really good. Plenty of options for those who prefer their food cooked.
Service was a tad poor, however well above the Faulty Towers standard.
