Absolutely fabulous! Definitely the cleanest hotel I've ever been to, with the most helpful, friendly staff. They knew my friend and I right away and did anything they could to help us with luggage, traveling other places, linens, what to do in Queenstown, etc. The other customers were also friendly. Free lockers, towels, wifi, kitchen with coffee and tea, tourist pamphlets, computer, hot tub, etc. Bathrooms were heated, which was awesome, and the blankets were actually substantial and warm, not to mention clean.

Perhaps I was unlucky and I was just there at the wrong time, but this hostel was the least friendly of all the places I stayed in NZ. It seemed to be occupied almost exclusively by long termers with no money, no imagination and no desire to meet new people. Despite there being so much going on in Queenstown, there were a lot of people who just stayed in the hostel all day watching TV. Personally I hate TVs in hostels. When you're travelling, with so much to see and so many people to meet, why would you sit around watching TV? But in this hostel, the main social area was the TV room, meaning that you couldn't really meet anyone.
Queenstown has a reputation as a party town, but not this place.
Also the staff were overly bureaucratic. It seemed that every time you asked for something, a form had to be filled in. I had to give my details and wait while the receptionist filled some paperwork in, just to get change for $5 to use the washing machine.
Like I say - maybe I was just unlucky, or maybe this place has become a victim of its own success. They are very proud of all their awards, with tripadvisor certificates stuck up all over reception, but not so concerned about maintaning their good reputation??

After traveling throughout the whole of New Zealand, I have stayed in a lot of hostels but The Flaming Kiwi is by far one of the most personal, clean and most importantly friendly hostels on my list! Loads of facilities including bikes and Frisbee's to borrow and also 3 well equipped kitchens it was always easy to use at any time.

Staff always ensured you had everything you needed and also were just really down to earth and friendly! Free EPIC WiFi is always a bonus too!

Room Tip: Rooms are all good condition and sizes, all have bathroom and showers available.

We stayed here in a 6 bed dorm for just 1 night. The chap on reception was very friendly and helpful. The building itself is a bit old, but the rooms and bathrooms are clean and do the job, also the 3 kitchens are well equipped.

The only thing is that it is a little further away from the action than most other hostels. This does make it close to the supermarket though!

Had a great time in this small but cozy hostel. The location is great, close to the center but also close to the cheapest supermarket in town. Great service, they're always willing to help you. The free coffee/tea, unlimited internet/computer use, spa and free bike hire are very good for the price. The hostel is very clean, though, as already said before, it's getting slightly older. Also liked the fact that there are sockets in the lockers, so you can easily charge your phone during the night without having to worry about it.

Stayed in a "twin cabin" 17th-21st Dec '12. 49 bed hostel, located just a few minutes' walk from the town centre and a minute's walk from Queenstown's least expensive supermarket. Staff are friendly and happy to advise on what to do/ where to go during your stay. Reception open 8am-8pm and there's always someone on site. There are no charges for the many "extras" on offer: free bikes, free unlimited internet (very rare in NZ), free international phone calls.

In terms of accommodation itself, the twin cabin was great - clean, reasonably spacious and self-contained so no noise. Bathrooms are kept clean, although shower temperature can change quite dramatically if water is being run elsewhere! Instead of one large kitchen there are several smaller ones, which are reasonably well-equipped although not big enough for many people to cook at one. One thing to note is that there is a curfew in the kitchens - no cooking (or excessive noise) after 10pm - which makes this one of the few Queenstown hostels where you are unlikely to be kept awake by other guests, although potentially inconvenient if you get in late.

Room Tip: Some of the dorms are adjacent to the kitchen. The "cabin" accommodation is in self-contai...

Rooms are light and comfortable with clean linen and no squeaking.

Very affordable with BBH!
