It is hard to right a review on this as it was just so freaking awesome!
We took our just turned 7 year old, and neither my husband or myself had previously done any white water rafting. From the moment we met the team at base, to the time we returned, we did not stop laughing and smiling. The drive through Skippers Road is certainly interesting, however Marshall did an outstanding job of taking our mind of the narrow, two lane, gravel road that we travelled through. There was certainly plenty of photo opportunities, and when we stopped for an opportunity to stretch our legs and have a photo taken, Mark and Marshall were more then happy to play photographer.
We picked up Little Rich along the way, who then added more humour to the trip. Not only is it informative, but interactive! When our trip in to the canyon ended, we were quickly supplied with thermals / fleece, wet suits, spray jackets, booties, life jackets and helmets. Very efficient. There was also a supply of water, fruit and chocolate bars for us to restock our energy levels. A quick bus ride to the rafts, and we were away with a quick safety briefing and another photo op.
We were in the raft with Marshall. He really is great with kids. Our son was at the back with him and he gladly interacted with our son who did not stop talking, or directing us, the whole way! They also have their camera on them for the whole trip and swap this in between rafts for some funny shots.
We were also given the opportunity to jump into the water, if we wanted. We took this up, and floated feet first down a small 20 or so meter section of the water. The water was certainly refreshing, but not an experience we were going to miss out on. There were other opportunities to jump in the water as well, but this was always only for those who wanted to.
The rafting was perfect for a first time adventure, especially with young children. We all could not stop smiling. Once the rafting was over, we went back to get changed into our dry clothes again, have some photos, and again we were refuelled with juice, water, fruit, cookies and a mixture of fruit & nut bags. Fantastic!
Back to Queenstown via Skippers Road again, where Marshall kept us all entertained.
Overall, I can not say a bad word about this experience. If you have young children this is perfect (we had a 3 year old on our trip), but also if you just want to give white water rafting a go without going to full on for your first time, this is for you.
Our son wanted to go back the next day to do this again (we may have to!).
