“Almost decent hostel, almost in the center of town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

We stayed at Alpine Lodge for about a month as we were settling into town for the winter season. Have to admit that staying in a dorm for almost 5 weeks isn´t the greatest thing in any hostel, but it also could have been better... ok, the tv-room is very comfy and awesome, the woodburner cozy and warm and the size of the hostel is very nice (not too big). There is not the usual Queenstown-partycrowd and it´s situated close to (but not IN) town!
Why does this hostel only get 3 stars? Well, the whole place looks a bit run down, the owner (who´s by the way a seemingly nice but in reality very grumpy guy) doesn´t seem to invest much into the place, as you can see in the kitchen! Oh, one more upside: Free, unlimited Internet... that will get us to almost 4 stars ;)

I can honestly say this would be one of the best Backpackers I have stayed in.

It has a TV Lounge, Sky TV, a Computer/Reading lounge, Two Kitchens, Drying Room for my Skis and also a nice atmosphere. Close to the centre of town, its actually based almost at the end of the main street (Shotover Street) which is good.

I got a really good nights sleep and ended up booking an extra night. When I go back, I intend to stay here, this place is fantastic, it has great value for money, and I found the staff to be really good. I would honestly recommend a night here.

Also a big thanks to Mandy and all the staff who made my stay so aweome...You're all O for Awesome!

We stayed in a double room in the Alpine Lodge for three nights. The room was big enough, although it has a double bunk with a single bunk on top. We stayed in the quiet reading area part of the building which was quiet indeed. we shared one bathroom with a dorm ( I don't know with how many beds), so it was difficult to get in to the bathroom in the morning. Also the facilities weren't that clean, but as it isn't that expensive, okay. But what I really missed was the kind of homely and welcomed feeling in a hostel. We also felt as being in the way, and the staff wasn't really friendly and not at all helpful. If you cannot help it's one thing, but if you just plainly don't want to help... So I will definitely go and stay at another place the next time I'm in Queenstown.

Great location 2 min walk to town centre. Stayed here for a week with my girlfriend in a mixed dorm which was pretty cheap. Dorm rooms were a bit cramped had to place your bag in the nearest gap could do with bed being lifted then bags could just slide under. Staff were great and don't mind having a chat with you about travelling. Kitchen cookers need fixing/updating. It's a very homely atmosphere and you can actually get to sleep at night not like most places. All in all I would come here first for a bed next time I'm in queenstown.

I stayed with a mate a couple of weeks ago and liked it so much...I bought the company. Well not really but I did go back to stay. To sum it up, it's quiet, clean, tidy and friendly with a great location to walk into town and stumble back! Nicky who checked us in was a fountain of knowledge for what to do and who to do it with, and always has a smile. Taff, the owner is also a good laugh and so it's a home away from home. Thanks guys.....And I recommend anyone to stay there!

alpine lodge is a great backpackers/travellers lodge in queenstown. for anyone wanting an affordable (cheap as!), walking distance to central queenstown shopping/bars and nightlife, supermarket, adventure activities - queenstown is the southern hemisphere's downhill/cross country mountain biking mecca, paragliding, skiing/snowboarding, canyoning, frisbee golf/lawn bowls with so much more then the more than knowledgeable staff at alpine lodge will happily advise you of all the best activities/places/bars to check out. other outstanding features of the lodge i found were the extensive movie range, free wifi!, free tea and coffee! clean facilities, warm cosy fire and just good honest service. highly recommended!
