“Really great food.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2013

We ate dinner here last week and loved it. Great casual ambience.
Cosy with a fireplace in the dining area.
A great selection of Montheiths beer on tap and a small but varied menu.
We both had steak cooked to perfection. I had fillet steak on a potato rosti with fabulous mushrooms and a delicious jus and my husband had ribeye with a warm potato salad and bacon and mushroom sauce. Both delicious, perfectly cooked and well priced ( compared to similar quality in Australia)
An added bonus was that it was half price dessert night. Again delicious.
I would highly recommend this place and would love to visit again to try one of their amazing looking share platters.

“Diverse Selection”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013 via mobile

A very good selection of entrees, main course, beers and desert. The decor is warm and smart. My bride and I started with a Caesar Salad followed by the steamed muscles for me and the seafood chowder for her. Good but why in New Zealand do steamed muscles need to be served with a thick-heavy sauce? Steamed muscles have their own special flavor. Try steaming in beer instead. Deserts were surprisingly creative. A meal by themselves.

“expensive food & drinks”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

As with most places in Invercargill, the drinks in this bar are quite expensive thanks to the Licencing Trust. The menu looks very good, but quite expensive for bar food, with most mains being around $30. I had the battered blue cod (may as well while in Southland!) but the fish fillets were very small. Luckily they tasted quite fresh and the batter was good. I did find a stink beetle (still alive and wandering around) in my side salad - the waitress was suitably disgusted when I showed her and she took the offending insect back to the kitchen. I was given a free beer as recompense, but would have preferred to get my meal either paid for or replaced. The service was quite slow, but the staff were friendly.

“Drinks expensive but food was amazing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

When ordering a bourbon and coke I was stunned to be asked to pay $9.15!!! Apparently the Invercargill Licensing Trust decides the prices of all alcohol sold in Invercargill so no matter where you go the price will be the same, very steep price at that. We ordered a light meal not expecting much after the shock of the price of a drink but were pleasantly surprised at how great it was. Would highly recommend.
