“Great for after work drinks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

Late afternoon drinks on a Friday -- fabulous. Good vibe, lots of people (probably helped that it was a Friday), very upscale (no snub to Invercargill intended) and reasonably priced. Loved it.

“Noisy but perfect for the girls”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

If you want easy yummy food but don't want to sit in silence as you chomp down on your veggies this is the place to go - music playing, people chatting and generally a pleasant crowd to keep you company. If you need peace and quiet go during the week.

“Place to relax”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

I haven't dined here, but The Kiln is a great place to unwind. They have an outdoor area (on street frontage) with huge gas fires, next to trestle tables which provide a nice spot to sit and chat. They have Monteiths on tap indoors, and provide live music some nights. A warm place to relax.

“Wholesome, tasty, good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

I have just had a "quite nice" dinner at The Kiln.

I was quickly greeted on entry at 7pm, and shown to a table. The wait staff were very friendly, well spoken, and seemed to know what the menu meant. All good so far.

I ordered the lamb shank and seasonal vegetables. The lamb was not the most tender I have ever eaten, though not so tough as to cause complaint. The sauce it was cooked in was, however, very good indeed. A side of seasonal veges was almost perfect: cauliflower and broccoli cooked so hot through, yet still crunchy and delicious. Wedges of red onion were cooked nice and soft, though far from caramelised. The only let-down was spring onions, which were a bit tough and chewy.
For desert (half price, being Monday) I chose the bread and butter pudding. This was also tasty enough, though the texture was a little, er, different..

The Kiln is somewhere to go to eat, rather than to "dine".
They offer a good, solid meal for a reasonable price, with good wines, and a comprehensive selection of Monteiths beers.

Would I go back? Yes, I certainly would.

Lovely atmosphere, food had large servings and very tasty. Good section of wines to be had. Would eat here again. Well done The Kiln.
