“Clean, quiet, beautiful house and lovely outdoors”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2009

I stayed for one night in Southern Comfort. As others say, it's a very homey sort of place, fairly quiet but very close to the city centre and the lovely Queens park.

The kitchen is brand new and very clean. The living room is pretty much the opposite, very old and dated, but that's ok as it's only armchairs to sit on. The bedrooms are fairly standard comfort and space.

There are two outdoors spaces, the front one where people socialise and have a drink, and the back one where people can read in quiet - very enjoyable to have the choice!! The house itself is an old villa - very beautiful.

The internet is free, but very, very, very slow!

All in all, a comfortable, clean, and good value hostel!

This is the 2nd time our family have stayed at this lovely home. Recently my partner and his Dad which is 70+ stayed a few days whilst they were doing some building in Invercargill and renovations. They both had a very enjoyable, comfortable and safe stay, very clean, decent owner, reasonable prices, comfy beds, warm. Was a great experience for them both to meet other travellers, enjoy life, talk with people of all ages/ nationalities.

A lovely place to stay. It's set in a quiet residential area a few minutes walk from the town centre and round the corner from the i-site and Intercity bus stop. It's a nice old house and the rooms are warm and clean. There's no TV but a log fire more than makes up for that, and overall there's a really friendly atmosphere. The kitchen is decent, the showers are good, and there's free internet and lots of information available. Overall a very good standard.

We were driving the southern scenic highway and finished our trip in Christchurch the other day. We stayed at Southern Comfort for one night and had an ok stay. The hostel is not your usual backpackers, especially if you're used to the hustle and bustle of places in Queenstown for example or the more commercialised chain hostels in New Zealand e.g. Base Backpackers or the company that runs ACB, Discovery Lodge and Hot Rocks in Rotorua.
SC does feel quite homely, and certainly looks homely - it is a house after all! We stayed in the fireplace 4 bed dorm on the ground floor - lots and lots of space and decent wooden bunk beds. The bathrooms were beautifully decorated for a backpackers and were very very clean and tidy - same goes for the kitchen, it was very well equipped and clean. There is no tv but a radio playing constantly in the living room and one computer for free emailing but nothing else. The living room is rather like an old people home with its dated furniture and decor, but with a large supply of old magazines, its not something you cant handle for one or two evenings. The place is pretty cheap to stay, clean and you are able to organise trips to Stewart Island from there. Nice place, but if you want a little more action probably not your cup of tea. Infact if you want busy, why are you in Invercargill!!!

  • Liked — Large dorm room, comfortable, clean kitchens and bathroom.
  • Disliked — Maybe a bit quiet but the whole town is quiet so maybe not such a good 'con'.
  • Tips/Secrets — Check out the YHA in town first, its apparantly a bit depressing but might but livlier than SC. I doubt that it would be cleaner, warmer or more homely though.

I wasn't sure where I should stay when I went to Invercargill. I checked reviews and found a nice review on Southern Comfort backpackers. It was possibly the nicest backpackers I've ever stayed in the entire world!!! It's a beautiful character villa that has been converted into a backpackers. There were only 5 beds in my room (this is the cheapest style room), and we had an ensuite!!!
There were three other bathrooms available in the house. The bathrooms had beautiful colored lead light windows, spacious and clean. The kitchen was really clean, and even had a dishwasher. The outdoor gardens were the best, and a lovely place to hang out and meet other people. There was a quiet courtyard in the back that I went to when I wanted to read. Compared to the below average place I stayed at when visiting Stewart Island, this place was a 5 five hotel! I couldn't wait to return from the island!
