“Really good!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

A surprisingly good regional museum and art gallery. You could spend hours here. looking at shipwrecks, castaways, the seal trade, coast watchers and maori history. only shame is that the floors are not polished timber.

“Invaluable in Invercargill”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

I always visit the tuatara in the museum, and have a look at whatever's on display in the Art Gallery when I'm in Invercargill, but on this latest visit I appreciated how much else they have under the one roof. There's the I-Site information centre, 2 x internet computers, plus the cafe which does a seriously good macadamia macaroon. And outside are the Botanical Gardens. This building is close to the city centre and easy to find. I recommend it as a focal point for anyone visiting Invercargill.

“Impressive & Free. The Tuatara are a MUST SEE!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

We weren't intending on visiting a museum when stopping at the Invercargill Inormation Centre - but very glad that we stumbled across this gem! The entrance is inside the city's I-Site Info Centre. There are apparently over 90 live tuatara in the large, open enclosures - so it's very easy to spot a good many without any difficulty. (I'd say a Must See, for any international visitor especially.)

Besides the Tuatara, there is plenty of other varied exhibits to view - all for free. The museum could be a liltle bit more hands-on/interactive - esp to keep young ones interested - but some great local & national history exhibits. Well laid out.

While at the Info Centre, consider picking up a "Heritage of Invercargill" brouchure, to take yourself on a self-guided city tour. (There's also a "Heritage of Bluff" brouchure. Don't miss Bluff Hill!!)

The Queens Park gardens (outside the Info Centre) are also impressive, a include bird aivary & are well worth visiting.

“Museum”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014

Was ok but expected more on Burt Munro to be honest!
Invercargill is now quite famous for being his home and yet the display was a room 3x3 with a video and two bikes....disappointing

“Very good eclectic collection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

Great to see the Tuatara that belongs to reptilian order 'sphenodontians" existing 150 million years ago. They became extinct 60-65 million years ago except in NZ. Even though they were in captivity, it was fascinating. Also good collection of Maori artifacts and Antartica exhibits. Some interesting art too.
