Wonderful permanent exhibits, Tuatara, and current showings. Located next to Queens Park which is also excellent.

“A Museum With Exhibits Of The South Antarctic Islands”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

The Southland Museum is worth visiting for the tuatara (an ancient living reptile) the art displays, and the Sub-antarctic exhibits. Plus it is on the edge of Queens Park which is an impressive calm space of 200 hectares in the middle of the city.

“Replica of "World's Fastest Indian"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

Went to the museum to see the replica of Burt Munro's "World's Fastest Indian" motorcycle which was used in the movie. There is also a replica streamline shell housed here. Some photographs of Burt and his bike line the wall near the replicas.
For the 'real deal' check out the bike at E Hayes and Sons hardware store.

“The food should be buried in the back somewhere among the exhibits.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

The Museum and Gallery are good to look at and visit. But I went for the food and have to say not worth the effort. Limited seating. Menue not inspired. Pricey enough for below average food. What I am hoping is this was just a bad day and since I visited you have improved. It was such a disappointment. Did finish off by having a look around which improved my mood.

Some very good exhibits, definitely the place to go on a cold wet invercargill day (which was everyday of my visit)
