I can't believe this place is still up and operating....lino in the bathroom lifting all around the edges....rotten walls in the shower......missing tiles on bathroom bench so allsorts of bits collect in the gaps.......kitchen bench is warped and lifted, obviously the water has got underneath it - BIG disgusting cobwebs hanging from the higher parts of the rooms and like someone said below, management wasn't even concerned when I voiced my disgust and concern. We stayed there 3 nights for a conference at the University (2x 2 bedroom apartments) and only got fresh towels when we asked for them and not once did they come in and change the rubbish bins or check the place out - WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE don't let the look of the outside influence your decision to stay there - it is the only thing the motel has got going for it

As a marching team we stayed at this motel in 2 units, one had recently been renovated and the other hadn't, however we had an enjoyable time there and for being on a main road and amongst uni students we certainly did not miss out on sleep. it was lovely to have the room for 5 pers in each to have room and not be tripping over over each other. The cost was very reasonable and certainly served our purpose. Cleaners were in everyday and ALL towels were changed daily

Primary reason for choosing this motel was its proximity to the University of Otago to attend a conference. Stayed in a two room renovated apartment. It was on the ground floor close to the (main) road, so quite noisy. Thankfully the bedrooms were on the back wall, furthest from the roadside, so sleep was not too disrupted by traffic. Firstly the good: relatively large, with very large bathroom; glass shower; electric blankets (which was a plus, since the apartment was not well heated or insulated). But there were also some dodgy things: prongs on the power cord for the heater were very loose and did not seem safe (reception advised "it should be OK to use"...); electric blankets heated to very hot levels; electric blanket cord for the upper bunk bed dangled dangerously over the head of the lower bunk bed; very few power points, so had to choose between using the electric blanket or lamp; obvious large holes (about a foot long) in the timber flooring under the carpet. Reception were not particularly welcoming, and it was also fairly disappointing that four adults were given a two room apartment with bunk beds. The only way we could tell we had a renovated apartment was from other reviews of this hotel... The renovated rooms are still very dated.

Room Tip: Renovated room is a must.

Totally agree with other reviews - rooms terribly outdated and should not be sold as apartments. Have been informed that this was built 30 years ago as student accommodation and it should stay that. There were holes in the wall - no washing machine & dryer as advertised in glossy brochures. Staff couldn't care a less when told them the price was ridiculous and that their brochures were false advertising. Went next door to Ahlambra Oaks Motor Lodge - which was absolutely great - and he is quite used to getting people from Woodlands checking out and moving to his accommodation.

During a recent New Zealand, we stoped in Dunedin for 3 days. Seeking accommodation, we visited the Dunedin Tourint Informtion centre (I-Site). They recomended the Woodlands Village motel and arranged a 3 night booking.

On arrival at the motel, the room we were given was old, dirty, moudy and outdated. It should not have been used for accommodating guests. The carpet was dirty, torn and mouldy. The bathroom was dirty and mouldy. We even had to change a light bulb to see in the bathroom. The motel reception people could really not have cared. During the night, a mouse even ran over the bed.

Maybe the motel does have clean renovated rooms, but we were not given one.

We left the next morning not at all happy, and to their credit, the I-site refunded our money and found alternate suitable accommodation.

We stayed here for 2 nights in January. I have mixed feelings about this place. It is both charming and run down and depressing. We had inspected a number of other motels in the area, all of which were newer, nicer and ultimately not much more expensive than this one. However, the selling point was of this one was that it offered two bedrooms and a living area. It also had a lovely garden with a climbing frame. We were shown a huge upstairs flat for $140 which was recently renovated but was very hot, directly on the very busy street and involved going up 2 flights of very ricketty stairs. The one we chose was not renovated but was on ground level and at the back of the building. The manager said that this one was $165 per night but $15 for each child. I was rendered speechless and my husband burst out laughing. She reduced the cost to $140. On the plus side it had a full ktichen and electric blankets. It has a huge airing cupboard and a washing machine and dryer. It is in walking distance of the excellent Otago museum. On the down side it is an old building removated somewhat oddly in the 1970s. It is dark and gloomy, especially at night. It had the lowest watt bulbs I have ever encountered. The bathroom is old - the shower has no soap holder and the toilet had a broken roll holder. The front bedroom had bunk beds that gave me some concern and a very old, soft single bed. It is also a very airless, stuffy room. The double back bedroom was bigger and brighter but it backed onto a shared student house so Saturday night was a bit noisy. It was also a very cold room and I think would be chilly in winter. There are apartments above and the inhabitants plus their draining water can be heard. The furniture was pretty old and the TV didn't work very well. No Sky TV. The garden in front of the units can get a little crowded and smokey. Security is not great either. I think that this complex is more about long term accommodation and it is pitched at students.

  • Liked — Sunny little garden
  • Disliked — Run down and not very clean look and feel of place
