“More comfortable than it looks!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

Our booking for this hotel was pretty much last-minute, and its motel appearance concerned me. However, we needn't have worried, as it's entirely up to Mercure standards, and any architectural features are merely inherited from the surroundings. The hotel is spacious, the garden it's centred around is just gorgeous, while our standard room had ample space for a 3-star property (the same goes for the bathroom). The staff was fairly polite, if somewhat invisible. The only thing gone awry was the lack of housekeeping, for no obvious reason, but our 2-night stay was too short to go and complain about it. The botanic garden is a stone's throw away, while the town centre remains at a convenient distance even for walking, so it's a win-win. All things considered, it's a good value hotel with boutique qualities to it, even if the prices are a bit on the steep side.

There is no air conditioning and our room was uncomfortably hot after a sunny day. Reception provided a fan which was only a partial solution.

The hotel is located a long way out of the town centre.

Service at dinner was slow with insufficient staff to cope with the coach parties.

We booked this hotel at the last minute on a sudden impulse to travel to Dunedin. Upon arrival, the girl at reception, Gemma, was really friendly, directing us to a nearby place for dinner and chatting with us. The room was lovely, clean and spacious. We hadn't expected this great standard for what we paid. The location is close to the city but not so close that there are too many students around. We would stay here again.

A poor choice for business travel. Seems to be a major stomping ground for bus tours and school trips. Breakfast had massive queues to eat cooling, rubbery eggs. All the best seats in the breakfast room were reserved for the bus tours. In the evening, the bar and restaurant seemed to open and close in a very narrow window.

Wifi was very expensive and very slow, and only available in the lobby.

On the positive side, my room was large, clean and comfortable. The grounds are beautiful.

Possibly the place is wonderful if you're on a bus tour, but if you're traveling for business, I suggest staying somewhere else.

Leisure Lodge is well positioned on a major road but still quiet. Being across the road from the Botanical Gardens is a real plus. The staff were very helpful and the option of enjoying a quiet drink in the gardens was pleasant.

We stayed here for one night as part of our tour of South Island. It ticked most of the boxes in that it was not right in the centre of town which we felt especially with a large student population might be a bit noisy, but it was still easy enough to get into the centre when we wanted to go. There was a guest laundry with washers and dryers on the first floor not far from our room which was very handy. The garden was lovely so we made the most of having a pre-dinner drink sat out in the sunshine. Our room was was comfortable and of a good quality and clean and the downstairs public areas were very spacious and staff pleasant and helpful. We had intended to go into town for dinner but had a quick look at the hotel menu first and decided to stay put. We were not disappointed. The meal was of a very good standard and service was not bad considering there was a large coach party in the other part of the dining room. All in all we were very happy with our stay here and felt it represented good value especially as we got a special deal. One thing that might be a problem for some guests is that there did not seem to be a lift to the first floor. Also as it was hot when we stayed there was no air con in our room which did make it more difficult to sleep.

Room Tip: No lift to first floor so if this is a problem carrying baggage etc need to ask for ground floor.

Lovely hotel, near the gardens.
A reasonable price I think, for a modern place. Comfortable bed and room, large tv on a swivel so can be watched from either bed. with sky included.
Enjoyed watching the world go by on a warm night on the balcony.
Everything clean and well presented.
A nice bonus was the 11 o'clock leaving time. 10 is fine, but that extra hour means you can go for a stroll through the gardens first, and don't feel rushed to get on the road again.
