“Free and Easy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2014

Well organized and arranged in chronological order this is an excellent museum. All on one level but housed in different but adjoining buildings there is a wealth of information and (for some - us) some nostalgic exhibits. Some clever and interactive displays and some hands on / sit on exhibits. Good cafe in entrance lobby and 3 sets of toilets. It is about Dunedin and the Otago region but it is more than that.

“Very interesting for heritage buffs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

The Settlers Museum is a great way to spend a few hours in Dunedin and learn something along the way about the early settlers in the area. The museum was recently renovated and provides many practical and interesting expositions, including various everyday items from the mid-19th century and life-size models of a typical settler cottage as well as of a basic multi-person ship's cabin illustrating how the settlers actually travelled. The museum is for free, which makes it all the more agreeable.

“Nicely done, but limited in scope”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

The Settlers Museum is architecturally attractive and technologically advanced, but the scope is narrower than we thought it would be. We may not have fully understood what the museum's focus would be, but its exhibits would seem to appeal mainly to local residents of the Dunedin area rather than visitors from other areas or countries. In addition, we were disappointed that the exhibits did not really explore the relationship between the early settlers and the existing Maori residents.
