“A pleasant and informative afternoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

An Egyptian mummy, with arthritis, detected through modern technology, the bonus of discovering a Minton umbrella stand (Minton collector), informative display explaining the earthquakes. Worth a visit. Good cafe too!

“Butterflies! Plus plenty more...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Otago Museum is a great place to take the family. The main area of the Museum is free to enter, and there are exhibits covering local history and native wildlife. The antiquities and decorative arts section was very comprehensive, although the presentation behind glass a bit boring for younger kids. The Christchurch Quake exhibit is based on the same exhibit put together by the Canterbury museum, and includes a number of items I had seen previously there. It certainly makes you feel a bit nervous walking around the historic double brick buildings of Dunedin though!

But the highlight is the hands-on science centre and Butterfly House - which does cost to enter. The science centre has lots of hands on scientific principles illustrated and explained through experiments you can activate yourself. The displays cards explain how to perform the experiment, and why you observe the result.

The Butterfly room is amazing - many species of tropical butterflies plus birds and lizards are enclosed in a warm humid environment. If you sit still you might even find yourself a friend, as the butterflies do alight on to the visitors from time to time.

We all thought the Otago Museum was great!

“A wonderful place for children and adults alike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

So much to see and plenty of hands-on stuff for the children. Probably a place to visit a few times as otherwise it can be a bit overwhelming. Don't miss it though

“Great antiquties section”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Had a brief visit a couple of years ago and loved it so made this the first top on our visit to Dunedin this time. They have a fantastic antiquities section - we were fortunate in being there at the same time as a group of uni students were having a tutorial so had the opportunity to overhear lots of interesting information that made the exhibition even more interesting. Will definitely be visiting again nex time we're in NZ.

“It's Hard Not to Like!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

This is a neat and tidy museum with a "Butterfly Zoo" where they release a new batch every day, we understand, filled with tropical plantings, small streams and pools with turtles and fish, a waterfall, butterflies that will perch on your hands or clothing, small birds peeping through the undergrowth, a gecko hiding in the foliage, various balconies, stairs, walkways to see the domed "zoo" from various perspectives. A real delight. Plus the artifacts found in "real" museums with many historic items relating to Maori culture, animal, bird, and insect collections, etc. And, a very complete restaurant, clean, attractive, to enjoy, all easily accessible not far from the heart of town.
