“We absolutely loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

We absolutely enjoyed our stay with Peter and Anna and we highly recommend the place!
In general my girlfriend and myself we travel quite a bit and we have seen many places the last couple of years.
We never came across a place like Anna and Peter created.
To keep it short but sweet:
If you like:
- nature,
- gardens,
- handpicked furniture pieces which are stylish but also eco friendly,
- having a shower with complete view over the bay in an open-glass-in-house shower,
- cooking in a very well equipped kitchen (by far the best we have seen in many different homes on many different continents)
- receive some homegrown ingredients (salat, carrots, eggs, potatoes, apples, etc. etc.)

--> then you are very well placed at the Hereweka Garden Retreat.

We absolutely loved it and have taken away some great memories!

We loved our time at Hereweka Garden Retreat! The cottage is spacious and wonderfully laid out (especially the decks and shower!). The location and view are truly beautiful, and we loved waking up and spending time there in the mornings especially. It's an ideal location for getting a bit off the beaten track and exploring the Otago Peninsula too. There was room for two adults and a toddler.
Peter and Anna were gracious hosts - so friendly at attentive, but we also felt like we had our own space. The grounds are beautiful for walking around, and our son loved helping pick lettuces and apples.

We highly, highly recommend it!

We arrive in Dunedin and have lunch at Nova Café, a museum restaurant. Then we drive along the Portobello Road, a winding coast road that is bit dangerous to drive along due to missing barriers. Cars are regularly fished out of the water here. At the end of that road we turn right. Anyone with lowered suspension on their car would now probably get stuck en route, thus missing out on Anna and Peter’s eco paradise. This couple of environmentally-conscious and green-fingered doctors runs the Hereweka Garden Retreat, part of a 12 acre property, in the midst of nature on the Otago Peninsula. Warmed by the wood-burning stove, you can enjoy homemade muesli, whole-meal bread, free range eggs, and an open-air shower. This turns showering into a whole new experience. The delicious organic breakfast hamper is one of a kind. It’s a pity that we can’t stay here even longer ... We stayed at Hereweka for one night while driving the Southern Scenic Route, and it was truly a wonderful way to end our trip to New Zealand.

The property itself is just gorgeous, and the cottage is beautifully designed and very welcoming. We made ourselves right at home! We loved the breakfast hamper and took our time relaxing in the morning to fully enjoy the place. While we were only there for one night, this would be an incredible place to stay and spend a weekend (or longer) on the Otago Peninsula. In one day we couldn't cover everything we wanted to explore, but managed to see some amazing highlights. Our hosts were helpful when we had questions, but not intrusive, which is exactly what you want when staying in a place like this. What a unique experience that will be hard to top elsewhere!

This place is heaven on earth! We stayed for (unfortunately only) two nights over New Years Eve. The cottage is quite new and located in a beautiful setting overlooking Hooper's Inlet on the Otago Peninsula. The cottage has a deck, which is perfect for breakfast (home made bread and jam, fresh organic milk and eggs). The deck can also be accessed through the shower (!) - open the door and you get the feeling you're showering in the garden. The fireplace, the coffee machine (porta filter and not just some instant coffee like in most other places) and esp. the shower and the very comfortable bed make this lodge the best place we stayed in while touring New Zealand.
The hosts Anna and Peter were always very helpful and even supplied us with herbs and salad from their garden as well as with tips for the area and binoculars when we went to see the penguins. The garden itself is one of a kind and we wish we had more time at the retreat to explore it. If you want to see penguins, sea lions and albatross on the Otago Peninsula, this is the perfect place to stay since it's only a ten minutes drive to all the places. After spending days with busloads of tourists on the West Coast, finding this place to relax was the best thing that could have happened to us!
