“Cheap and cheerful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013 via mobile

We called in on our way home from the catlins. For a family with small kids the old motel was great dated but you can see where they have put new heaters ect in. Staff were very friendly and the rooms were large. I hope next time traveling through we are lucky enough to stay here again thanks Sahara!

This property is in a great location and within easy walking distance to the Octagon/Art gallery, Museum, Olveston, Botanical Gardens & fabulous Good Earth Cafe!

We stayed in the new luxurious studios, which are very clean, modern & comfortable. Well equipped with fridge, top plate & microwave if needed. We booked via Wotif and got a great deal too!

The only critisism is that given there are 4 studios to each block, other guests are not always considerate & allow their entrance doors to slam shut at all hours and disturb sleep! To help overcome this, notices could be put up in each guest room reminding guests to use the door handle and another solution would be for the owner to change the 'tension' on the hinge, so that it soft closes instead of slamming.

We really enjoyed our stay and the owner was very friendly and helpful on arrival and for those of you who like a bit of nostalgia, you could book a room in the old hotel, which has some very grand featues & the atmosphere of Fawlty Towers, but without Manuel!

Room Tip: As the property is on a busy street, request a studio at the rear, it was much quieter

Our team stayed here during the marching nationals, with some in the guesthouse and others in the motel units. The units were very clean and tidy with fresh white towels and extra milk readily supplied upon request. Those in the historic guesthouse were not quite so comfortable as this accommodation was of mixed quality, but the breakfast and lounge rooms were well patronised by our marchers. The proprietor, Brian, was very congenial, nothing was too much trouble, and he was helpful with our queries. Prices were reasonable for what was on offer. This property is in a quiet area and close to amenities that can easily be reached on foot.

Room Tip: Take one of the units for privacy and comfort.

My wife and I stayed here one night. Had prebooked as our first night in Dunedin. Huge upstairs room with ensuite in the guesthouse. Friendly, clean and helpful. Not full of flash modern appointments but reasonable cost and ammenities. The guesthouse part has a bit of character, don't know about the rest though only because we didn't stay there.

I had booked this accomodation on the strength of the website, and in this instance the camera did lie..
I should have known the setup was being run on a shoe string when the landlord greeted us in the guest house cold enough tokep meat fresh wearing a body warmer.
To say my heart sank when I saw our accomodation is an undertsatement. We were placed in the old Motel accomodation at the rear of the site and not the guest house or new accomodation so this review does not apply to them.
The room was basically a disgrace to the word budget it was in desparate need of a refurbishment and decoration and whilst it possessed the basic amenities with empahisis on basic, they were old and in need of relacement.
The bathroom was sited in the bedroom meaning anyone sleeping in the front of the studio had to disturb the other to use the bathroom.
The bathroom was grubby with the vinyl flooring split allowing water to seep under the flooring and contirbute to the unsual smell pervading the space.
The furniture seem to be collected from cast offs from other places with none of it matching.
The condition of the room was such that you did notwant to stay in to relax and fely compelled to go out each night.Fortunatel I only had 2 nighs in this place before moving on.
If you are considering the Sahara Motel for your break do not choose the budget option,it stretches the use of the word budget beyond its true meaning.
In the Sahara's favour the bed linen and towels were spotless and the staff friendly.

Stayed here after the earthquake in Christchurch. Last minute booking. Stayed in the guesthouse which had a queen bed and shared toilet. Big and spacious. Clean. The TV was a computer screen and was a bit small for the room. Otherwise it was clean. Not that noisy although i remember hearing squeeks in the hallway (remember reading others saying that wall was paper thin). I found the host friendly and will be there again in Sept for another trip.

We had a one night stay in the 'old Guesthouse' part of the complex. We had been 'upgraded' to one of the large rooms on the second floor overlooking the road. The room, which had an old world charm, was spacious and clean, containing a comfortable queen size bed as well as a single bed. Bed linen and towels were spotless and the ensuite was modern and immaculate. Whilst the double glazing was not perfect, it reduced road noise to an acceptable level. The desk staff (owners?) were friendly and helpful. Definitely value for money and would not hesitate to stay there again.
