“Gone downhill”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2014

We stayed here several times when the complex was first built and it was very tidy and well run by a couple who'd been in motels for many years. Everything was excellent. We stayed again last weekend after a 3 year absence. Rooms are the same it is just that the place is not being maintained. There is moss and holes all around the fences that could be fixed with a waterblast and some filler and paint. The outside table was rusty and dirty and the upside down flowerpot they provide for an ashtray was full of cigarette butts. The driveway had massive mounds in it which are obviously earthquake related but need to be sorted out. The big one for me though was the fact that I could not get the sky 1 channel and I called reception who (it became clear later) were too busy attending to their baby to worry about a bothersome guest. They answered after I rang three times and it was one of the cleaners who came to sort it out. She did her best but was no help. I popped down to reception and after a while got to talk to the owner by phone (he was upstairs babysitting) who offered us a refund. We didn't want a refund, I wanted to watch the final round of the PGA. We would not stay again because if they can't care for their guests or keep their premises up to standard one can assume they are missing out some other important aspects of being a good motelier.

In most respects it was a typical good quality hotel room, perhaps not 'luxury' (as the sign outside says) by current standards. But if everything had worked it would have been fine. The unit even had a washing machine and dryer which would be very useful for multiple night stays.

First issue was TV channels. It was very hard to find how to switch between the two channel modes (Freeview and Sky), and after going through all the channels multiple times it was clear that the Sky Movies Premiere channel was unwatchable quality, and Sky Sports 1 was not included at all. Whereas ESPN and Sky Sports 2 were tuned to multiple channels. At least we were able to plug in a USB cable and watch some programmes off laptop.

Second issue which we found too late to do much about it, was that we couldn't get water coming through the bath or shower. We did everything we could think to do with the controls. Not having a lot of time I just had a wash using water in the basin and a flannel.

Checking out a short time later I mentioned the problems and at that point was told that my room (Room 2) and one of the other rooms are missing a lever. The lever would have made it obvious and easy to turn on the water (and adjust temperature). Without the lever and without being told about it beforehand, we were completely lost and all our turning & pulling & pushing was achieving nothing.

Very clean and tidy unit with plenty of room and very reasonably priced. There was a kitchen and washing machine and drier in the unit. There is a very nice Indian restaurant across the road as well as a supermarket around the corner.Would certainly stay again.

I stay here regularly for business. Clean and tidy. Comfortable rooms with good facilities. Good location. If you like a pint of Guinness I Highly recommend popping over the road to Bailey Irish bar about 1 minute walk. Highly recommend this motel.

We arrived late and left early so i cant comment on location and surroundings but i can say that the room was clean, roomy and comfortable and we really appreciated being able to put a load of washing through after 2 weeks on the road! They even supplied washing powder which was a nice touch. Well priced accomodation and good value.

Stayed on our first night in NZ and was surprised with the excellent quality of the motel. Check in fast and easy and the room was spotlessly clean. Our room contained 3 single beds all with electric blankets, huge TV, well set up kitchen and the bathroom was lovely and clean with a washing machine and dryer. We stayed in room 15 which was on the ground floor furthest from the road, we did not hear any road noise and had a perfect nights sleep. Would highly recommend this motel and hope that the rest of the accomodation we stay in on our travels in NZ live up to this standard.

We stayed one night at the end of our trip to the south island and really appreciated the quality of this motel. A large room, comfortable beds, kitchen facilities, and above all, the washer and dryer which really came in handy. The TV was enormous. It's a very short walk to a selection of restaurants (we got delicious Thai takeaway and ate in the room). Inexpensive shuttle transport to the airport for the following morning was easily arranged with assistance from reception. We were very happy with this motel, all across the board.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor are accessed by staircases (no elevator), so keep this in mind if you have...
